Summary
The Royal Cornwall hospital is the sole provider of pathology services for Cornwall and is currently looking for a motivated, part time (18.75 hours) band 6 specialist biomedical scientist to become part of our team in the busy, professional and friendly Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion Department. The successful candidate will be HCPC registered and completed or making good progress towards Specialist Portfolio or equivalent, with an interest in Haematology and / or Blood Transfusion; they will rotate through all sections, covering the full range of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. In the absence of suitably experienced and/or registered staff, we are willing to employ to Annexe-21 of band 6, with progression to band 6 after attainment of specific, timely goals.
Our laboratory has full ISO 15189 Accreditation status and the Transfusion laboratory is fully MHRA compliant. The laboratory is equipped with Abbott Alinity full blood count analysers, Werfen Coagulation TOP analysers, Grifols Erytra blood grouping analysers and access to Sebia capillary electrophoresis for haemoglobinopathy and antenatal sickle cell and thalassaemia screening. The hospital is a Haemostasis Centre with the laboratory undertaking advanced coagulation thrombotic and haemorrhagic investigations. We also undertake basic male fertility screening within the department working closely with the Cornwall Centre for Reproductive Medicine.
You will be expected to participate in an out of hours rota covering evenings, nights and weekends. The current out of hours system is due to be replaced in the future with a rolling shift pattern, which this post will be expected to join.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the department meets quality targets such as turn-around times and consistency of test results.
Supervise staff, organise, and prioritise workload to meet demanding deadlines.
Ensure lower grades of scientific and scientific support staff comply with Health and Safety protocols as set out in relevant documentation.
Assist in the production of all Standard Operating Procedures for devices, use of equipment, care of the working environment & training protocols.
Engage with the QMS and instil a quality culture.
Engage in the implementation and development of systems & devices.
Engage with the departmental training and competency programme.
Ensure that goods are ordered and monitored in a timely fashion.
