About us
At the Science Museum Group STEM engagement is at the heart of what we do. We inform, inspire and encourage learning on-site, as well as through outreach and online. We are now recruiting for Explainers to join our Learning Team at the Science Museum in London on a part-time basis working 3 x 6-hour shifts per week (18 hours per week in total). These shifts would fall between Tuesdays and Sundays with the following shift times available:
- 9:45 - 15:45
- 10:50 - 17:00
- 11:50 - 18:00
About the role
As an Explainer, you will be interacting and talking with all sorts of people on the museum floor for most of your working day. You will be the face of the Science Museum's mission of Inspiring Futures and building Science Capital in our visitors. These interactions will include science communication, answering museum queries, giving directions and general customer service.
You will be a science communicator, delivering a wide-ranging and creative programme of activities and events for specific audiences such as schools, families, adults and people with additional needs. You will reveal the wonder of science by telling authentic stories about our collection and facilitating and supporting the learning of children and adults.
We provide opportunities for you to develop your skills through on-the-job training programmes to support you in delivering high quality learning experiences that are memorable and engaging for our large and diverse audiences.
About you
Joining us you will have experience of working in a public facing role using excellent customer service and communication skills. You will use your experience of successfully delivering presentations, performances or demonstrations to communicate concepts confidently, acting as a learning role model for young visitors and deepening visitors' understanding and appreciation of the objects and collection.
Crucially you will be a team-player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to proactively seek and learn from feedback. You will be able to work to a timetable of shifts and be punctual in order to keep within the rota.
Due to some of the requirements of this role (e.g. working on events for over 18s) you must be aged 18 or over to apply. If successful for the Explainer role you must be available to attend an induction week from Monday 17th to Friday 21st June.
