A Vacancy at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust.


The post has been designed to take a leadership role within the Trust looking at the experience and quality of postgraduate medical training within CNWL. The post holder will work closely with both the Postgraduate Medical Education Team & Director of Medical Education and the Quality Improvement Team & QI Clinical Lead for the Trust. The post will start on 7th August 2024 in line with most junior doctor rotation dates.

The postholder will build on current Quality Improvement projects in relation to Medical Education and have the opportunity to be involved in other key priority areas of the Quality Improvement Team such as improving safety on mental health wards and reducing the number of moderate and severe harm incidents. There will be exceptional support to the post-holder to project plan and deliver and will offer an unrivalled opportunity to understand medical education and quality improvement at a Trust level. For medical personnel the post would be offered as an Out of Programme for Experience (OOPE).

We are looking for ambitious and motivated individuals who feel they can make a real difference in terms of taking on wide-ranging projects and delivering meaningful results. The successful applicant will understand postgraduate medical training and will be able to think strategically around solutions. The outcomes of the work should easily accommodate publication in peer-reviewed journals related to medical education and quality improvement.

The start date of the post can be negotiable depending on the individual circumstances of the successful applicant. However, the post will be vacant from August 2024.

CNWL was authorised as a Foundation Trust in May 2007.

This post has been created as a 1 year developmental experience working closely with both the Postgraduate Medical Education Team and the newly established Quality Improvement Team at CNWL.

This is an innovative and exciting leadership role in which the post holder will develop a programme of work aimed at improving the experience of postgraduate medical training within the Trust using educational and quality improvement methodologies.

This role will build on extensive trainee and supervisor engagement work that has been rolled out to improve the trainee experience within the Trust.

The post offers an exciting advanced programme of experiential tuition and project-based training in Quality Improvement methodology and practice, based with CNWL in association with the renowned Institute of Healthcare Improvement.

In addition to the work around trainee experience, the post-holder will have the opportunity to be involved in other key priority areas of the Quality Improvement Team such as improving safety on mental health wards and reducing the number of moderate and severe harm incidents in other services.

The post would be suitable for a higher trainee/SpR as an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE)

Induction and Development Plan
• The postholder will receive a programme of induction by way of introduction to the Trust, QI Supervisor/Manager, QI Team, and QI
• The Post holder will meet with the Trust Quality Improvement Clinical Lead and the Director of Medical Education to agree their work schedule linked to a Development Plan, and identify any additional employment support needed
• Depending on the experience of the post-holder, the outcomes and deliverables of the post will be set with the PGME and QI teams and reviewed regularly

Learning Opportunities

Quality Improvement:
• The post holder will join the recently established and high profile Trust Quality Improvement Team which is led by Dr Simon Edwards, (Trust QI Lead and Divisional Medical Director) and Alison Butler (Trust QI Programme Lead), based at Trust Head Quarters on Euston Road in association with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement IHI, Boston Mass USA
• Intensive introduction to Quality Improvement Methodology using the IHI model including through the Trust’s taught programme including on line modules hosted by the Life QI Platform as well as class room teaching delivered by the QI Team and supervision
• Gain significant knowledge in the evidence around delivering change within the NHS
• Experiential learning working with the Quality Improvement Team on a variety of QI projects, but with a particular focus on elements relevant to the concerns of postgraduate clinical trainees in the Trust e.g. staff and patient safety, pathology reporting systems, efficient and effective OOH rotas, interprofessional working and upskilling of non-medical staff.
• Opportunity to gain experience of publishing QI work in peer reviewed journals

Teaching and Training:
• As part of the advanced learning package the Postholder will undertake training as a QI Champion/Mentor and join the QI Teaching Faculty and gain experience and skills in delivering the QI Learning Programme to staff, including lectures, facilitating workshops and working with the QI Team offering support to mentor QI Projects and Project leads across the Trust.
• In particular, the postholder will have a role in engaging, training and supporting trust based postgraduate clinical trainees in the QI approach, which in itself will constitute a discrete QI project supported and led by the Trust Educational Team
• The postholder will have the opportunity to work alongside the QI team to develop and deliver bespoke QI training for staff across the trust
• The postholder will work with the Medical Education team to identify educational needs for trainees and design and deliver teaching and training for trainees

Leadership and Management Experience:
• The postholder will regularly participate in the QI Team Management operational structures and processes
• From time to time the post holder will accompany the Trust QI Lead to gain experience of trust level strategic meetings where QI is featured e.g. reports to the Trust Board, Divisional and Service level meetings.
• Similarly, the postholder will work closely with the Director of Medical Education to gain a broad and deep understanding of Postgraduate Medical Training
• The postholder will have the opportunity of enrolling on the Trust 2 week Executive Shadowing Programme

Academic Programme:
• CNWL has an active Academic Programme across all sites which the postholder will be supported to attend as required
• There are Bi-monthly Trust-wide Learning Rounds which the Post holder will be encouraged to attend and participate in
• There is an annual Medical Conference and annual Research Conference, which the postholder will also be encouraged to attend.
• These will also represent opportunities to both further the programme of work the postholder is engaged in, as well as the opportunity to highlight and present findings to a wide audience across the Trust

Research:
• CNWL has a strong and developing commitment to research led by Director of Research Professor Richard Watt, with active programmes undertaken in partnership with a number of Universities including Imperial, UCL and Brunel.
• There will be opportunities for the Fellow to gain experience through participation in established programmes linked to their QI role and activities.
