Technical Operator (Radar/Computer Technician)

- £44,000 plus benefits Serco are recruiting for a Technical Operator (Radar/Computer Technician) to join their current team based at RAF Fylingdales.

The Technical Operator will act as a key member of their Solid-State Phased Array Radar (SSPAR) 24/7 Operations and Maintenance Team. This is a permanent position working on a 12-hour shift pattern based at RAF Fylingdales, North Yorkshire, offering employment in the space sector supporting the site missions of detecting and tracking missiles and satellites.
Main Accountabilities:
The Technical Operator reports into a Shift Leader and the Operations and Systems Support manager. The primarily duty of the role is to provide 24/7 technical support to ensure the continual delivery of SSPAR radar availability to our RAF customer. This involves fault finding, data processing and performing both unscheduled corrective maintenance and scheduled preventative maintenance. The position of Technical Operator requires developing knowledge of Red Hat Linux, SGI computer systems, UEWR radar systems and unique facets of the radar mission and other support systems. These specific requirements such as site familiarisation, technical training and on-the-job training will be provided at RAF Fylingdales. The Technical operator may also be required to represent the company and department during technical discussion with other support contractors and US Space Force and Royal Air Force stakeholders.
What you’ll need to do the role:

We are looking for someone with a technical background who is enthusiastic, reliable and hard working with an interest in the space/engineering industry. Successful applicants must be happy to constantly learn and develop new skills whilst having a flexible attitude towards work.This is a unique role working on a military computer/radar system which has no rigidly predefined requisite requirements.

Desirable attributes or qualifications include:

- Ideally a minimum A-Level or ONC education in a suitable discipline (Electronics, I.T, Computers)
- Related experience working on civilian, commercial or military computer or radar systems and/or training or with transferable skills.
- A capability to learn the architecture, technical performance requirements and operation of the SSPAR radar and computer systems
Due to the nature of our work, the successful candidate must be able to pass SC clearance, which includes a criminal records check. Additionally, as the role is related to UK Defence, only UK nationals can be considered for the role as directed by the MOD. Candidates must be able to travel to our site at RAF Fylingdales, North Yorkshire, on a daily basis and public transport is not available.
