Summary

The University Hospitals of Leicester, Mortuary Service cares for approximately 6000 patients each year and is capable of accommodating up to 700 patients simultaneously.

We are a busy mortuary, performing an average of over two thousand post-mortems each year, this includes adult, paediatric, hospital, coronial and forensic examinations. We receive referrals, from across the Midlands, for bariatric and patients with group three pathogens, including prion disease.

We have been at the forefront of developing CT as a non-invasive diagnostic alternative to invasive post-mortem for a number of years and currently derive a cause of death using CT on approximately eighty five percent of Coronial post-mortems. We advocate external only and limited examinations where possible and also perform clinical intervention as preparation for angiograms.

This application will be closed once sufficient applications have been received. This can happen quickly, therefore early application is advised.

We are currently seeking an Anatomical Pathology Technologist to join our team of five APT’s supported by Assistant Technical Officers and administrative staff.

The successful candidate will ideally have achieved the Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or Level 3 Diploma, but consideration would be given to a suitable unqualified or part qualified candidate. A successful qualified APT, unfamiliar with the specialities within Leicester, would be given training and support to achieve competency.

A successful unqualified or part qualified trainee APT would be expected to attend the Level 3 RSPH Diploma Course and attain the Level 3 Diploma Level 3 & 4 Diploma Courses & Resources (aaptuk.org) .

All our APT’s participate in an out of hours on-call roster and qualified / trainee APT will join this roster when they have attained a sufficient level of competency. Participation in the on-call roster entitles our APTs to a retention payment, in addition to the usual standby and on-call payments.

The APT role is demanding and will require physical skill, dexterity and exertion and would suit someone with a proven track record of resilience.

We are one of the biggest and busiest NHS trusts in the country, incorporating the General, Glenfield and Royal Infirmary hospitals. We have our very own Children’s Hospital and run one of the country’s leading heart centres.

Our team is made up of more than 17,000 staff providing a range of services primarily for the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

We work with partners at the University of Leicester and De Montfort University providing world-class teaching to nurture and develop the next generation of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, many of whom go on to spend their working lives with us.

Our purpose is to provide ‘Caring at its best’ and our staff have helped us create a set of values that embody who we are and what we’re here to do. They are:

• We are compassionate

• We are proud

• We are inclusive

• We are one team

Our patients are at the heart of all we do and we believe that ‘Caring at its best’ is not just about the treatments and services we provide, but about giving our patients the best possible experience.
