Job Description

Summary
Support Workers required to work with 23-year-old man with learning disabilities.
He has Downs syndrome and verbal dyspraxia and lives with Mum and Dad on a farm near Henfield. He has completed a three- year residential course in Hospitality where they found him funny, caring and considerate. He can communicate verbally but uses some signing to support his language, mostly Makaton. He can sometimes get frustrated if you speak too fast and/or use too many words. He sometimes forgets things and needs to be given time to think and make decisions. He has a lack of danger awareness so needs to be kept safe and supervised at all times.
He has a wide range of interests including music, walking, swimming, cycling, making/watching videos, going to the golf-driving range, cinema, cooking, and animals e.g. dogs and horses. You would be required to support and prompt him with personal care tasks in the morning e.g. getting washed, getting dressed appropriately etc.
You would also be required to provide supervision, support and encouragement while he does his voluntary work each morning, has lunch and does other activities in the afternoon.
You must be friendly, patient, understanding and reliable. Having a sense of humour will be very helpful. Experience of working with people with learning disabilities would be helpful but not essential. You just need to be patient and willing to take your time.
You should be a driver with your own car. Mileage will be reimbursed at 45 pence per mile when taking the young man out. This will be a rewarding role and an opportunity to make a real difference to a young man’s life.
