Summary


The post holder will work within the cancer genetics service and form a key part of the senior genetic counselling management team. They will be responsible for cancer training and education and will be a training officer for STP trainees and support the training of MSc genomic counselling students in Cancer Genetics. They will also be responsible for the day-to-day management of a sub-team of staff within the Genetic Counselling team reporting to the Lead Genetic Counsellor.

They will lead on cancer mainstreaming activities and support colleagues within the cancer mainstream services and oversee the various MDTs supporting cancer patients. The post holder will lead on patient engagement events and materials for patients as well as being involved in service development.

The post holder will have specialist knowledge in cancer genetics contributing to the delivery of a high quality genetic counselling service to individuals and families with or at risk of cancer genetic conditions. They will work within the AGNC code of Ethics and maintain GCRB/AHCS/HCPC registration.

1 - Clinical Expertise
• Take responsibility for providing expert cancer genetic counselling for patients and families. This will include seeing patients and their families at within the Trust and various regional clinics both in person, on telephone and through video consultations. They will also be expected to develop an area of expertise within cancer genetics
• Manage an individual caseload autonomously, including taking a lead role in the provision of predictive genetic testing, supporting colleagues in complex decision making clinical appointments, management of urgent referral and enquiries.
• Communicate effectively with patients and families to elicit concerns and expectations. Obtain, document and interpret family, medical and psychosocial history. Receive and interpret complex and sometimes conflicting information and confirm diagnostic information.
• Take responsibility for communicating highly complex genetic information to patients and relatives. This will include risk assessment and communicating risk to patients and families, explaining any genetic test results, implications of genetic test or risk assessment as well as management options and supporting patients in informed decision making.
• Apply new scientific and clinical information to respond to changes in risk to patients and their families.
• Provide information on the care of other family members including identifying at risk relatives and advising on how they could obtain genetic counselling or screening.
