Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen within the maternity service at Oxford University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust for an exceptional, committed and motivated midwife for the role of Antenatal Midwifery Ward Manager.

The individual must have a strong commitment to midwifery practice, safety and have excellent organisational, analytical and leadership skills. Liaison with the Senior Midwifery team and the Consultant Obstetricians is key and as such the successful applicant must be a team player and have excellent communication skills. Other key relationships are the Delivery Suite coordinators, Practice Development midwives, Clinical Governance team, and groups representing women’s views.

The successful midwife will be part of the hospital Band 7 team; this will include participation in the operational bleep holder rota and Manager on call rota.

The Antenatal Ward manager has continuing responsibility, while on duty, to manage the antenatal maternity ward. This includes the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards. They will facilitate innovative and evidence-based midwifery practice through professional leadership and support of the clinical team.

They will:
• have managerial responsibility for a group of staff working within their practice area
• act as a credible and professional role model and encourage and empower staff to develop personally and professionally to achieve their maximum potential
• liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team and facilitate a collaborative approach to care
• report directly to and develop close working relationships with the Maternity Leadership Team on operational and general management issues and clinical issues relevant to their practice area
• liaise with members of the Oxford Brookes University Midwifery Education and OUH Practice Development Team to develop an effective learning environment for students
• assist the Director of Midwifery / Matron in achieving the strategic objectives for the Maternity service
• represent the maternity services / OUH NHS Trust on internal/external working groups as needed

Main responsibilities:

Working as a midwife the post holder will:

Professional and Clinical Practice:
• fulfil the role of a midwife as defined by the World Health Organisation and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Midwifery Rules and Code of Practice
• reflect the Trust's guidelines, policies and standards of practice
• manage a clinical caseload/area and be accountable for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, responding to the individual needs of women and their babies
• maintain and extend clinical skills in all aspects of midwifery practice that are relevant to current developments in the maternity services
• participate in and support the development of evidence-based clinical practice, ensuring agreed policies, guidelines and standards are implemented and monitored
• motivate staff to submit ideas to improve care and in collaboration with colleagues implement change; monitoring and discussing outcomes with relevant personnel
• act as a role model in clinical practice and be proactive to implement local, regional and national midwifery policies.
• liaise with OUH colleagues and other professional and non-professional agencies relevant to the needs of women and birthing people to ensure health and social care needs are addressed as appropriate
• support staff within the Directorate to deliver high quality services to women and their families
• liaise with the Clinical Governance Team on aspects of unsafe practice that do not meet agreed professional standards, and take appropriate action as necessary
• co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the team/area.
• be experienced in complex antenatal care provision
• demonstrate and respect the Trust guidelines and policies that promote equality and diversity

Quality:

The post holder will:
• ensure all staff are aware of and comply with the Trust’s values
• ensure that staff within the clinical area have access to and are aware of current national and local policies that impact upon and affect the delivery of midwifery care
• contribute to the clinical audit programmes
• ensure that clinical risk management is integral in the practice area/relevant clinical team
• work with the Maternity Leadership Team to ensure good standards of housekeeping exist within the practice area /clinical unit to comply with infection prevention and control policy
• assist with the monitoring of the quality of care in the practice area and participate in audit programmes as required



Managerial Practice:

The post holder will:
• utilise available staff resources effectively, ensuring the clinical area/clinical unit is safe and adequately staffed with the appropriate skill mix at all times
• contribute new and practical ideas to improve efficiency across the service
• participate in the recruitment and selection of staff
• co-ordinate and participate in the staff appraisal scheme to ensure all staff have an agreed personal development plan
• investigate defects in equipment/supplies and report outcomes in accordance with OUH Trust policies
• assist the Maternity Leadership Team in investigating complaints from women & birthing people, visitors and staff - reporting the findings in accordance with the Directorate's Comments and Complaints policy
• collect and record statistical data for audits, and research projects as required by local, regional or national bodies
• competently record information on the maternity data system and retrieve relevant information from the Information Technology systems
• complete the training programme and take part in the maternity service bleep holder rota.
• participate in flexible rostering, including an on-call roster, to provide a safe ‘woman centred’ maternity service.
• be supported in participation of the manager on-call rota covering county-wide maternity service
• monitor the budget for the clinical area/clinical unit and highlight any issues to your Matron
• participate as required in local, regional and national developments on behalf of the Maternity Directorate
• assist the Director of Midwifery / Matron in achieving the goals and objectives of the maternity services and OUH Trust



Professional development, Education and research:

The post holder will:
• act as a mentor to students and colleagues
• assist educational staff with supervision and assessment of learners and support other mentors
• actively participate in the preceptorship of newly qualified midwives and new midwifery staff in liaison with the Oxford Brookes University education staff and the Practice Development Midwives
• work with the Oxford Brookes University education staff to develop an effective learning environment
• work with the Practice Development midwives to develop and monitor the Maternity Support Worker role
• participate in clinical teaching and workshops supporting and directing staff to appropriate courses/seminars
• identify their own personal development needs in association with the line manager via the annual appraisal process agreeing a personal develop programme congruent with personal, Directorate or Trust needs that addresses further development in managerial and leadership skills and responsibilities



Health and Safety:

The post holder will:
• Report and investigate accidents/untoward incidents involving service users and/or staff following OUH Trust policies and inform the Maternity Leadership Team as appropriate
• Be responsible for Health and Safety within own practice area, ensuring that the Trust's Health and Safety Policy is adhered to, safeguarding the environment for service users, staff and visitors
• Ensure confidentiality is always maintained in accordance with the Trust Confidentiality Policy



Standard Duties:

The post holder will:
• Be aware and observe fully the employee’s duties under the Health and Safety at
• Work Act and observe all the Trust’s policies relating to Health and Safety and Risk
• Management, including the duty to report adverse incidents
• Each individual employee has responsibility to ensure they are committed to maintaining a high quality of service to the clinical departments they support. In addition, individual staff have a major role in suggesting and implementing improvement to services and in exercising professional responsibility for both them and their peers within an open ‘no-blame’ culture
• Engage in the Trust’s system of individual performance review/values-based appraisal agreeing performance objectives and discussing development needs in line with requirements of service needs and the operational plan
• Be aware of and observe fully the employee’s duties in the prevention of infection and observe all the Trust’s policies relating to infection control commensurate to the level of responsibility for this post
• Work in accordance with Trust values
• Undertake duties according to the NMC Code ‘Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates
