Summary
Kingston Adult Education is looking for a specialist teacher who can work with small groups of adults who exhibit low levels of literacy to help build up their reading, writing, and spelling skills.
The key goals of the lessons you deliver will be to:
Support adult learners in developing their literacy skills and apply these skills to their lives in practical ways such as reading important letters, filling forms, and making sense of instructions
Build up the confidence and self-esteem of our adult learners
Foster independence and enjoyment of reading
This role may suit primary school teachers with experience of teaching phonics and reading, or professionals such as speech and language therapists or dyslexia specialists looking to adapt their knowledge to supporting adults in a classroom setting.
Please note that our adult literacy courses are designed for learners whose first Language is English. This role is not teaching initial English language acquisition (such as EFL or ESOL) to adults whose first language is not English. Experience in teaching English language acquisition, however, may be beneficial to this role where it is also combined with experience teaching English literacy or phonics
This role is a part-time teaching role and will be based at the Hook Centre in Chessington. There will be approximately 1 - 3 separate cohorts of learners, each receiving approximately 2 - 3 hours of support per week. The courses are currently scheduled to run on Monday afternoons, however, we may be able to offer some flexibility to suit your availability.
At Kingston Adult Education, we deliver a variety of English-related courses including GCSE English and Functional Skills English. As such, there may be opportunities to teach other English-related courses in addition to the Adult Literacy courses depending on your experience and availability.

About You
The successful candidate will:
Hold a relevant teaching qualification at Level 3 or above (or be willing to work towards one)
Have experience in teaching or supporting English literacy skills including phonics, spelling, reading, and writing
Be able to approach the lessons in a patient and supportive manner, remaining sensitive and empathetic to adult learners, some of whom may experience low confidence or anxiety as a result of their literacy level
Experience with teaching Functional Skills English qualifications is an advantage as some learners may work towards Entry-Level Functional Skills qualifications
While our adult literacy courses are typically delivered in a classroom setting, you should also be able to teach online where necessary. When Kingston Adult Education lessons are delivered online, we use Google Classroom and Google Meet
You will also:
Assess learners at the start of the course and develop a scheme of work to meet their needs
Review learners’ work regularly and mark classwork / homework where appropriate. Provide constructive developmental feedback on work including spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG)
Monitor and track progress and adapt the Scheme of Work to meet the needs of the learners when necessary
Negotiate learning objectives for each learner and record them in their individual learning plan
Differentiate the delivery to meet the needs of individual learners
Ensure all course documentation (such as scheme of work) is in place and up to date
Ensure that Health and Safety, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, Safeguarding, Prevent and other KAE policies are implemented
