Summary


An excellent opportunity has arisen to join our expanding patient centred and supportive Trauma and Orthopaedics department at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting time to join us with opportunity to support inpatient and outpatient transformation as part of a blended workforce as we develop our new Surgical Unit which is expected to be functional from 2025.

The trauma service at Blackpool Fylde and Wyre is one of the busiest we offer a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, . There is subspecialist interest pre-existing with routine hip and knee as well as complex arthroplasty work being offered, foot and ankle service that includes diabetic foot work, upper limb work that includes arthroplasty and a limited paediatric service. The trauma service looks after over 500 fracture neck of femurs annually and this is often the maximum delivering NOF unit for the North-West. We have been regularly applauded by NHFD for our pathways and performance.

This post will provide the successful candidate with excellent experience and opportunity in trauma and orthopaedics.

Our unit has a high reputation for good quality training and the experience reflected by a mixture of national training registrars, Mch and MTI trainees that this department supports. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals is an NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre and involvement in Orthopaedic related audit, quality improvement projects and research would be fully supported.

The post holder is responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of the post as agreed with their clinical director and undertaking the programmed activities set out in their Job Plan, as reviewed regularly.

While on duty a doctor has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients.

It is also the duty of a doctor to:
• Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.
• Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment.
• Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time. A doctor is responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonable incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan as such:

• The keeping of records and the provision of reports
• Maintaining skills and knowledge.



Doctors will be expected to be flexible and co-operate with reasonable requests to cover for their colleagues’ absences where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so.



Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Trust is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) supporting a population of around 1.6 million people.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a resident population of approximately 330,000 and the 12 million holidaymakers who visit the area every year. The Trust comprises Blackpool Victoria Hospital which is a large busy acute hospital and a smaller community/ rehabilitation hospital - Clifton Hospital. Outpatient services are also provided in Blackpool, Fleetwood and Lytham Hospital. The Trust is also responsible for the provision of a wide range of community healthcare services, including District Nursing, Community Matrons and therapy services.

The organisation provides specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology services, delivers community health services to over 445,000 residents including those in North Lancashire and hosts the National Artificial Eye Service across England. We also have specialised Cardio-thoracic Surgical and Sleep Medicine services (including polysomnography) and provide urgent and emergency care services to an estimated 18 million people who visit the seaside resort each year.

This post will support the ongoing provision of a timely, quality and safe specialist orthopaedic and trauma service. The successful candidate will support Inpatient and Outpatient transformation/recovery and restoration post Covid-19 whilst gaining excellent experience in the management of both inpatient and outpatient patients. The post will support the successful candidates own personal and professional development alongside the training needs of other trainee doctors, ACP’s and Specialist Nurses within the department.
