Summary


This post will be based at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) to support the Clinical and Nursing Lead for Gastroenterology in meeting the standards required by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG).
The post holder will:
1. Manage, direct, and evaluate the nursing care for a defined caseload of patients in all areas of Endoscopy i.e. pre-assessment, admission, procedure rooms, recovery and discharge.
2. Contribute significantly toward the continuing development of professional nursing practice within the Endoscopy Unit.
3. Maintain and continually develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to individual clinical area.
4. Encourage the patients’ family and friends to be actively involved in the caring process.
5. Act as a mentor and role model to others, reflecting the beliefs about professional nursing practice and patient care outlined in the Endoscopy department philosophy.
6. Communicate information effectively to patients / carers and all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Set and maintain standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with team leaders and departmental manager.


Supervise, mentor, support and educate junior nurses in the clinical practice setting.
Adhere to the NMC Code of Practice.
Adhering to BSG, JAG and GRS guidelines and practice accordingly.
Demonstrate a problem-solving planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care using a holistic model of care.
Adhere to trust and department infection control policies and guidelines .
Demonstrate understanding of COSHH regulations and the importance of using personal protective equipment.
Demonstrate endoscopy skills, be focused in assisting medical staff with all types of endoscopic procedures.
Ensure accurate specimen labelling and traceability, resolving discrepancies as required.
Demonstrate awareness of and adherence to moving and handling policies and guidance relating to patients and equipment.
Comply with radiation regulations when working in the x-ray department by wearing appropriate protection and monitoring equipment.
Demonstrate specialist skills in the handling, cleaning, decontamination, tracking and maintenance of endoscopes & adhering to local policies and national guidelines.
Demonstrate competence in assisting medical staff with all types of endoscopic procedures.

Act as a resource to patients and other clinical areas, providing clear information and education.

Administrative and organisational

Develop and strengthen interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and ensuring a good team spirit and collaborative and holistic working practices.

Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with nursing staff, patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team, assisting colleagues in patient care where appropriate.

Regularly act as unit coordinator in rotation with other senior staff, prioritising and allocating the workload to all members of staff, considering skill mix and patient dependency whilst ensuring effective patient care and departmental efficiency.

Review and prioritize patient referrals and allocate procedure times in collaboration with senior nursing staff and medical staff, assessing clinical urgency and departmental activity.

Contribute towards departmental projects audits and quality initiatives as directed by team leader or unit manager.

Be accountable for some specific responsibilities that contribute toward the organisational andadministrative work of the ward.

Ensure equipment supplies, disposables and staffing resources are used appropriately when prescribing and implementing care and treatments.

Report untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, and injury or drug administration errors as detailed in departmental and Trust protocols and procedures.

Demonstrate an awareness of health and safety regulations that apply to staff and patients in the clinical area and compliance with the procedures.

Demonstrate ability to time manage and support, monitor and report to senior staff any difficulties experienced by junior staff.

Demonstrate an ability to assist senior staff with effective use of resources and show an awareness of implications if budget targets are not met.

Have an awareness of local policies re: ordering drugs, loaning and maintaining equipment and educate and support junior staff in their implementations.

Demonstrate an awareness and ability to educate and support and supervise junior staff in the implementation of Trust policies re: patient possessions, ordering patient transport.

Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of local, care group, divisional, organisational and
governmental policies and agendas identifying implications for patient care, staff management and budgetary targets.

Develop specific roles, responsibilities and specialist skills and knowledge within the department, acting as a resource to the whole team.

Adhere to local and trust wide policies regarding drug administration and use of drug cupboard keys and monitor the practice of junior staff.

Display an awareness of the organizational zero tolerance policy and demonstrate an ability to implement and offer support to junior staff in relation to it.


Environment
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of work areas and ensure equipment is maintained in safe working order and that all requests for repairs and new equipment are reported.

To help maintain amicable working relationships with Nursing, Medical, Paramedical, Education and
Domestic Personnel.

Check and tidy waiting room, client toilets and other communal areas each morning and lunch time.

Report poor standards of cleaning.

Assist the safe administration and storage of drugs and medications according to hospital policy and the ordering of medication.

Ensure appropriate and accurate labelling and dispatch of specimens to pathology labs.

When necessary, deliver urgent specimens to pathology.

Adhere to local/trust infection control policies and procedures.

Adhere to all other trust policies namely: Health and Safety, Fire, Major Incidents, Accident

Reporting and Handling of valuables and clients.

To be courteous and helpful to clients and all visitors to the clinic.

Utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with patients and those involved in their care. To have the ability to communicate effectively with staff within the Trust, other organisations and with the public.

Maintain effective channels of communication with regards to client care and ensuring that client confidentiality is upheld.

Development and Education

Keep up to date with professional issues that influence nursing practice, management education and research.

Promote and practice, evidence based nursing care, embracing new ideas and changes for the benefit of patient care.

Accept responsibility for own personal and professional growth and for maintaining a record of evidence of professional development experiences within a Personal Professional Portfolio.

Discuss personal and professional development needs during an annual appraisal with team leader or departmental manager, developing, agreeing, and documenting action points in personal development plan.

Leadership and management

Take charge in the absence of the Senior Nurse.

Support the divisional matron in achieving service objectives.

Co-ordinate shifts.

Support nonclinical staff in clinical setting.

Allocate staff appropriately to meet the clinical workload within the Unit.

Ensure all available resources are used effectively including the control and usage of general stock within the department.

Order stock and non-stock items, drugs, and general and medical stock on a rotational basis, as required and under the guidance of senior nursing staff.

Respond to incidents as they arise.

Contribute to area’s clinical and non-clinical risk management and document untoward incidents.

Maintain the safety and security of clinical areas in relation to the building, drugs, patients’ notes and health & safety matters.

Work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team to achieve desired outcomes Support junior staff in professional growth e.g. student nurses through mentoring. Act as an effective role mode

Have and encourage a solution focused approach to problem solving.

Escalate appropriately concerns around skill mix and ability to match patient demand.

Report and document all complaints, incidents, or accidents to the nurse in charge or Lead Nurse.
