Summary


Band 6 Specialist Dietitian – Nutrition Team

Are you a dynamic dietitian with artificial nutrition support experience? Are you interested in developing your knowledge and skills in intestinal failure and parenteral nutrition? Are you interested in working as a core member of a thriving and forward thinking nutrition support service?

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced dietitian to join our nutrition support team in this full time (37.5hrs per week) permanent, band 6 role.

UHCW NHS Trust is a designated severe intestinal failure integrated centre, supporting patients with intestinal failure and complex enteral feeding needs from across the West Midlands. You will work as a core member of the well-established multi-disciplinary team alongside medical, nursing, and pharmacy colleagues providing dietetic care to both inpatients and in our outpatient clinics.

Service development projects, audit and research will be key parts of this role, including the opportunity to contribute to the expansion of the indirect calorimetry service. There will also be opportunity to contribute to the wider department student training activity and support newly qualified dietitians undertaking our trust preceptorship programme. You will be trained and supported by three senior dietetic colleagues.

Within the nutrition team your main duties and responsibilities will include:
• To provide specialist dietetic advice on the dietary / nutritional management of adult patients with intestinal failure or complex enteral nutrition support needs
• Contribute to the multidisciplinary management of a specialist inpatient and outpatient caseload of intestinal failure / complex nutrition patients on parenteral, enteral and oral nutrition support.
• Act as an adviser and educator to other health care professionals and other Coventry Dietitians in the specialist dietetic area of intestinal failure and complex nutrition support.

Clinical
1. To work autonomously to provide specialist dietetic advice to patients, their carers and staff within agreed protocols and guidelines and with support from senior colleagues including:
• Carry out nutritional assessments (interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometrics, clinical condition, parenteral and enteral nutrition intake and diet history) to determine nutritional problem.
• Development of treatment plans (calculation of nutritional requirements, analysis of nutritional intakes sometimes using specialist IT systems, client centred goals and discharge planning including patients on artificial nutritional support)
• Prescription of dietary treatment and ACBS products for conditions where there are limited professional / clinical guidelines available.
• Make recommendations for alteration of parenteral nutrition regimens
1. To be clinically competent following appropriate training to give specialist dietetic advice, treatment and dietary counselling to patients in, in-patient and out-patient clinic locations including consultant led clinics and structured group education programmes as appropriate.
1. To communicate nutrition and dietetic information in an understandable form to staff, clients and carers, requiring negotiation, persuasion, motivation and counselling skills including situations where there are barriers to change.
1. To use appropriate communication skills and resources to ensure that suitably accessible information is available to individuals on their dietary treatment/care plans.
1. To liaise with catering, nursing and dietetic staff to ensure the provision of a satisfactory meal service for individual patients
1. To attend and participate in multidisciplinary meetings and ward rounds.
1. To participate in the health promotion activities of the department.
1. To work flexible hours to meet the needs of the patients and the service as required
