Summary
St George's hospital is one of the country's leading teaching hospitals with an international reputation for excellent quality of care, cutting-edge treatment, education and research. We provide general, specialist, and tertiary services locally and nationally to all age groups. We recognise that it is only possible to provide high quality healthcare if we can recruit the right staff.
The Phlebotomy department see on average 6,000 patients a week, working with a large variety of specialities to provide the best possible patient experience. An exciting opportunity has now arisen for Band 2 Phlebotomists in our Blood Testing Department.
We are looking for enthusiastic and vibrant people to join our team of junior and senior phlebotomists to perform phlebotomy on adults and children over 12. You do not need previous phlebotomy experience but will need to be a dynamic and motivated person with previous patient or customer care experience. Our department also has community settings across 4 sites and so you will also need to be flexible regarding working times and locations. Of course, this also means that no 2 days are ever the same and each day brings a new experience.
The main responsibility of the Phlebotomist is to perform venepuncture for the collection of blood samples, with minimum trauma to both patient and specimen, from in-patients and out-patients for the diagnosis and care of a patient. It is essential to all aspects of the role that the post holder can organise efficiently, perform under pressure, work on their own initiative and as part of a team as well as under the guidance of supervision, following written standardised procedures.
There is a need for shift and weekend work that necessitates a flexible approach to the hours and site of employment.
You may also be responsible for answering queries from patients so need to possess strong communication skills.
We have a friendly, outgoing team made up of Band 2 Phlebotomists, Band 3 Senior Phlebotomists and Band 4 Phlebotomy Supervisors working across 4 sites in Tooting, Battersea, Roehampton and Raynes Park providing services from 07:30-20:00 Mon-Fri and Sat and Sun mornings.
The collection of blood samples from patients through venepuncture for laboratory analysis, as requested by doctors, when necessary for the diagnosis and care of a patient, ensuring blood samples are labelled correctly in preparation for distribution to the appropriate laboratories.
Liaises with all groups of staff to provide an effective Phlebotomy service.
To provide an efficient routine in-patient and outpatient Phlebotomy service to adults referred to the service for blood tests by their General Practitioner or clinic. The post holder will be required to work independently, liaise with other healthcare professionals, clinicians, laboratory staff, patients and/or their representatives. This may be in a hospital or outreach clinic.
