Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated Staff Nurses to join our team, you will be: flexible, motivated, an excellent communicator and a team player. Led by the Ward Manager/Matron on our Nurse Practitioner-led ward, we are a fast paced surgical ward caring for elective patients and those who require further investigations/treatment following admission to The Northumbria Hospital. The ward provides holistic care for several surgical specialities including breast and reconstruction surgery, bariatric, upper and lower GI surgery as well as gynaecological surgery.

We collaborate with practitioners across other departments to ensure continuity in patient care such as Occupational Therapy, physio, specialist nurses, social work, medical staff, theatres/recovery and our other Trust hospital sites.

There are a range of learning opportunities to develop new skills inclusive of Total Parental Nutrition (TPN), complex wound care using topical negative pressure dressings (TNP), use of central vascular access and extended skills in stoma education. We encourage our staff to develop their skills through a variety of learning environments believing that this will benefit patients contributing to job satisfaction.

Essential Criteria:

1st Level live NMC registered Nurse

Mentorship qualification or relevant qualification (essential requirement for post, expectation this will be completed within an 18 month period)

Full time or Part time hours would be considered



To assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care working as a member of the ward team under the direction of the Ward Manager.

To be responsible for the organising and co-ordination of nursing services in the ward/department in the absence of senior staff on a regular basis.

To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

To be responsible for all nursing care standards and to maintain high clinical standards.

To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.



We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. To provide nursing care to a caseload of patients and to provide verbal and written handovers to nursing colleagues and the multi disciplinary team.

When responsible for the ward/department to ensure that individualised programmes of care are formulated and carried out fully for each patient on the ward/department (up to 31 patients in a ward area).
