This is a substantive Palliative Medicine Consultant post split across both the community and hospital teams. The post holder will be primarily based in the community team at St Pancras Hospital, with 2 PAs a week in the hospital team (based at UCLH) .

The post holder will work closely with the community consultants and multidisciplinary team in providing consultant input and leadership to community palliative care patients in South Camden and Islington boroughs; and in addition to clinical care, each are closely involved with strategic development and service improvement, as well as the advancement of relationships with key colleagues. They will also work alongside the hospital consultants, clinical nurse specialists and junior doctors providing an advisory service to patients in one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK. The post includes participation in the on call rota (1 in 8) - 7 days a week 9 am- 8pm covering both community and UCLH. We are a dynamic service with strong links to UCL medical school, postgraduate training schemes (Palliative Medicine, GP, Psychiatry and Paediatric Palliative care), and the Marie Curie Research Department at UCL. These facilitate opportunities for those interested in formal education and research roles respectively.

You will be part of a busy proactive and innovative multidisciplinary team providing excellent care to patients and relatives. It is an inspiring and supportive place to work , with plenty of opportunities for education and training and personal development.

The Camden, Islington ELiPSe and UCLH Palliative Care Service is a well-established specialist palliative care service that has gained recognition for its innovative, integrated and comprehensive care provision. The service delivers a Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) Service throughout University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), within the private ward at UCLH, and within the local communities of South Camden, North East Westminster and Islington. It has a 7 day a week 9am-8pm visiting on call service to these areas.

The service has a robust programme of service improvement, audit and education and meets regularly to develop and deliver these.
The service works closely with primary care and other specialist palliative care providers at Marie Curie Hospice Hampstead, Whittington Health, Royal Free Hospital, St John’s Hospice and St Joseph’s Hospice and is a member of the North Central and North East London Palliative Care reference group, PallE8, and the UCL Palliative Care Research Consortium. It is a training unit for specialty registrars.

The post holder will be expected to:
• Provide clinical care to patients and those important to them within South Camden, and Islington (and NE Westminster) The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialists and other colleagues in the team, as well as colleagues within the wider service and throughout the Trust, and will liaise with professionals within the community - GPs, Community Nursing and other specialist Teams (e.g. Respiratory, Learning difficulties, Heart Failure, Dementia etc), and within St Pancras Hospital (St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit, Camden Virtual ward etc) as well as neighbouring hospitals as needed.
• Provide clinical cross cover for SPC consultants in the service who work in UCLH as needed.
• Work closely with the clinical lead for the service, as well as the leads for the community and hospital team.
• Represent Palliative Care at relevant clinical and strategic meetings (e.g. NCL Specialist Palliative Care provider group, PallE8, GP Multidisciplinary meetings, Cross community meetings)
• Attend and contribute to the community specialist palliative care MDT meeting each week.
• Provide clinical supervision and educational supervision to trainees working within the team, as well as educational support and teaching to members of the nursing team undertaking advanced practice (e.g non-medical prescribing, physical assessment) and to visitors to the team.

Hospital:

The purpose of this post is to provide clinical care and leadership within the UCLH Palliative Care Service as follows:
• Provide clinical care to patients within UCLH. The post holder will work closely with the with the inpatient lead for this team, Dr Jane Neerkin and inpatient lead clinical nurse specialist, Emily Anderson.
• Support Clinical Nurse Specialists and other colleagues in the team, as well as other colleagues within the wider service and throughout the Trust,liaising with professionals in the community as needed, such as GPs, community palliative care teams and community nurses.
• Work closely with the clinical lead for the service, Dr Rasha Al-Qurainy, as well as the leads for the surgery & cancer, medicine, and specialist hospital boards.
• Represent Palliative Care at relevant clinical and strategic meetings within the hospital.
• Share the clinical leadership with colleagues within the UCLH Palliative Care Team depending on demand.
• Actively contribute to the UCLH Supportive, Palliative and End of Life Care Strategy 2024-2028 agenda, working closely with relevant clinicians to optimise patient care, communication and use of hospital beds.
