Summary of the Duty Worker role in mental health:Responsibilities:
• Provide advice and support to:• Known service users: Individuals who have previously accessed the mental health service.
• New service users: Individuals seeking help for the first time.
• Other professionals: Offering guidance and information to healthcare professionals encountering mental health situations.
• Conduct urgent assessments for individuals needing immediate support.

Key points:
• No caseload management: The duty worker is not responsible for ongoing care of individual clients.
• Focus on severe and enduring mental illness: Serves individuals with conditions requiring specialized care.
• Collaborative approach: Works within a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with various mental health specialists, primary care providers, and community agencies.
• Required skills:• Strong initiative and self-motivation.
• Excellent teamwork and communication abilities.
• Knowledge of advanced nursing interventions and community assessment skills.
• Willingness to undergo relevant training.

Overall, the Duty Worker role plays a crucial role in providing initial support, assessment, and referral for individuals experiencing severe and enduring mental health challenges.

Carry out and coordinate comprehensive, systematic nursing assessments that take account of relevant mental, physical, social, cultural, psychological, spiritual, and environmental factors, in partnership with service users and others through interaction, observation, and measurement.

Work collaboratively with other disciplines, service user, and their carers to agree on a holistic person-centered care plan that addresses the needs identified through assessment.

To act as a clinical leader supporting best practices in line with NICE guidance.

To facilitate and review approved Quality Improvement initiatives within the care setting.
