The purpose of this role is to manage the operational procurement of Utilities and Energy services and products as required by the stakeholders.
This will involve working closely with business stakeholders to jointly create and execute short and long-term procurement strategies for the Energy and Utilities categories which will best position the client to maximise value delivery, minimise risk and deliver the agreed benefits of the category through cost saving, revenue generation and/or improved operations. The role will be actively involved in ensuring the clients energy transition and sustainability strategy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for end-to-end procurement including analysis, researching and assessment of market best practise, options generation, creation of pre-contract strategies, sourcing, project planning and management of implementation and delivery of category strategy including total cost of ownership, value creation and ongoing supplier relationship management strategic, including supplier sustainability performance.
The role has responsibility for managing and leading a small team, ensuring team have sufficient training, tools and support to enable their performance.
In addition, this role will liaise with the wider Procurement teams to ensure appropriate sourcing strategies on common spend areas (e.g. design/build/maintain/operate projects, asset maintenance & service, infrastructure upgrades). The role will work with the suppliers and the clients teams to monitor and report on progress against continuous improvement initiatives and performance measures.

What are we looking for?

  • Graduate level supported by professional qualifications e.g. MRICS, CIPS, APM, CEng or able to demonstrate equivalent capability.
  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in Energy, Utilities industry or in operational procurement for Utilities category with evidence of a Commercial and Contractual bias.
  • Excellent understanding of the Energy markets, terminology and energy supply contracts and UK energy infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of the UK Power market.
  • Strong Project Management skills and good technical understanding to enable delivery of strategy.
  • Experience of working in an integrated project team involving supplier partnering organisations.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing team(s) and influencing peers and stakeholders

What will you be doing?

  • Manage their category strategic sourcing activities for large value, highly technical and complex spend areas which align with the business and the broader business / market strategies.
  • Manage their category pipeline of Operational procurement activities.
  • Where required run robust sourcing activity including valid evaluation criteria and methods which stand up to external scrutiny, have been consulted with legal and meet the obligations required by competition law so the client is a fair procurer of goods and services.
  • Operate within the governance process and produce any required documentation to progress the sourcing of services or goods.
  • Challenge business plans and strategy documents to ensure robustness of approach that maximises commercial opportunity and mitigates risk for each relevant endeavour.
  • Administer and abide by a robust contract management process to realise maximum benefit from the sourcing activity while driving a behavioural safety agenda.
  • Work closely across the procurement team(s) with peers, leaders and stakeholders to drive collaboration and share best practice for synergies across common categories driving value add activities.
  • Collaborate, influence and champion close stakeholder relationships to drive governance through the SRM process. Proactively engage teams, peers, leaders and stakeholders across the business to align to both procurement strategy and governance for delivery of business objectives.
  • Engage as necessary with the role with the external market for procurement matters e.g. new commercial models, market shifts, new product offerings, innovation and trends; bring back best practices and lead initiatives to embed them within the operations.
  • Ensure the delivery through compliance with relevant regulations for procurement but to also encourage the sourcing staff to always adopt the most commercially sensible approach, whilst remaining compliant.
  • Take responsibility for all necessary agreed processes for supplier management, claims management, benefits and savings and continuous improvement targets whilst meeting all contract, regulatory, risk-reward and exit strategy requirements.
  • Work with the operational owners of contracts in their day-to-day accountabilities driving supplier performance.
  • Encourage innovation amongst the team to ensure that the focus is on adding value, not simply adherence to process.
  • The job holder will be required to be flexible and undertake any other duties according to the needs of the procurement function, including possible transfer between hubs and categories.
