Summary


Owing to an internal promotion there is an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Control Service working out of the Portsmouth based office at St Mary's Hospital

The successful candidate will support a team consisting of a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, a Clinical Scientist, (Team Leader), Clinical Technologists, Occupational Therapists and an administrator, working with patients with complex disability, assessing for, and installing environmental control systems to promote independence and safety for patients with complex disability.

This is an opportunity to use your technical skills and knowledge to assist patients living in the community to access their environment and use their computer so that they can remain independent in the community for as long a possible.

The service covers patients living in Hampshire the Isle of Wight and Dorset. The post holder will need to have access to a car for work and travel expenses will be paid. The post holder will cover patient needs primarily in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight but occasional cover in Dorset may be required.

The post holder is expected to have worked in the field of Environmental Controls/Assistive Technology/Medical Engineering and bring with them practical skills and knowledge that can be applied to these systems.

Base Location: St Marys Hospital, Portsmouth

The job will involve participating in the multidisciplinary assessment of patients and make recommendations for the technical solutions to meet the patients identified needs

There is a requirement to carry out the installation of electronic/electrical/computerised equipment (including Smart devices) in patients own homes or other places of residence.

The post holder will be expected to respond to requests for repairs and carry out fault finding on equipment and demonstrate problem solving skills in seeking solutions for patients.

There will be a need to teach patients and carers the various functions of the equipment and how to access the systems that you will install . Therefore, good communication skills, patience, and enthusiasm are required for this role.

Once skills and knowledge of the systems and service have the training of others within the team and in the wider healthcare community.

1. Undertake specialist assessments, individually or as part of the multi-disciplinary team, with patients with complex disability to determine their need for environmental controls.
2. Undertake interventions with patients of all ages; children under the age of 18 in their home environment or other relevant locality e.g. school.
3. Prescribe, install, maintain and repair equipment appropriately to meet patient’s need.
4. Undertake the selection, ordering, storage, maintenance, decontamination and evaluation of environmental control equipment.
5. Give advice to others regarding technical solutions for environmental control options within the patient’s home environment 6.Communicate the results of assessment and clinical decisions to patients, carers, other professionals, verbally and in writing.
