Summary


We have a great opportunity for a dynamic, inclusive and innovative Biomedical Scientist who would like to develop their career further as a visible senior leader for Haematology Laboratory Services at BHRUT. The role will operationally support the strategic direction for the service and will have operational responsibility for managing their Department. You will also work closely with the Head of Pathology, Clinical Lead, Clinical Director and Heads of Service of the other Pathology modalities across all BHRUT sites. Your ability and experience of driving and successfully achieving change will enable you to provide the leadership and strategic direction required to bring together our teams in the delivery of a patient-focused, cost-effective and high-quality service. The Haematology Department which is currently managed across 2 laboratories based at Queen's Hospital Romford and King George Hospital Goodmayes is run as one department; inclusive of Blood Transfusion and Haemoglobinopathies (HBO).

The Head of Haematology role is required to effectively manage all non-medical staff and resources within the department. To manage a high quality and cost-effective diagnostic and monitoring service for clinicians and patients, maintaining full compliance with statutory requirements including Pathology Accreditation.

The post holder will work internally with the Head of Pathology, Clinical Director, Clinical lead/s and Consultants in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Consultant Immunologist, Biomedical scientists, medical staff and support staff within the department, Clinicians (service users), Senior nursing staff, Service managers, Specialist practitioners e.g. in Blood Transfusion and Haemoglobinopathy and other Head biomedical scientists.

The post holder will work externally with the North-East London pathology network managers, Commercial companies, Universities, Health Professions Council (UK), Institute of Biomedical Science, Primary Care Trusts and General Practitioners, National Blood Transfusion Service, National External Quality Assurance Scheme.

Recognising and celebrating our workforce demographics the post holder will be responsible for managing all Biomedical Scientist, clerical and support staff in an inclusive and transparent way. Improving and maintaining staff experience within Haematology and Blood Transfusion is a key requirement for this role.

We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

We’re pleased to be leading the way inreducing the time our patientswait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to beaccredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of theNorth East London Cancer Alliance.

All staff are expected to be able to work on either site as required, the department is part of Blood Sciences which plays a pivotal role in the provision of 26 million diagnostic tests annually for the Trust and primary care services. You will lead with inclusion and compassion, having the ability to be creative and innovative to generate opportunities for the service, be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of commercial and business principles and have experience of involvement with strategic planning processes. You will be responsible for providing an efficient and accurate, quality assured diagnostic laboratory service to all users, facilitating staff training and development, ensuring relevant competencies are achieved to meet service requirements and turnaround times.
