A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Scientist to join the North West Genomic Laboratory Hub (NW GLH) at Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) and be part of one of the largest Acute Trusts in the UK, employing over 20,000 staff.
This is a permanent position based across two sites of the NW NHS Genomics Laboratory Hub (NW GLH) in Manchester, The Christie and St Mary’s Hospitals. The NW GLH is one of 7 GLHs recently created as part of a national reorganisation to provide a national genomic medicine service. It is a highly regarded, UKAS accredited, NHS clinical service provider of Genomics to a population of 7.2 million people in the North West of England as well as a wide range of national and international specialist referrals. The NW GLH is currently undergoing a significant transformational change program including implementation of a Whole Genome Sequencing service as well as multiple ancillary projects to support the national genomics service reorganisation.
The Cytogenomics team on the Christie’s site and the Molecular haem-onc team on the St Mary’s site provide services in line with the National Genomics Test Directory for the diagnosis and management of haematological malignancies. These services are part of the local Haematological Cancer Diagnostic Partnership (HCDP), facilitating specialist, integrated haemato-oncology diagnosis. Activity scope includes: karyotyping, FISH and SNP array (Christie site); and NGS, WGS, MRD and targeted mutation detection (St Mary’s Site). Following a TUPE transfer scheduled for completion in May 2024, both these genomic services will be operated by Manchester Foundation Trust, providing opportunity for further integration, cross training and development.

The successful candidate will have an excellent track record in service delivery and a clear vision of what is required to maintain and enhance the genomics laboratory service, including all aspects of quality and governance, efficiency and clinical utility. A flexible attitude is essential, as is the ability to work to tight deadlines to meet professional reporting time guidelines. The post-holder will work well in a team, have excellent communication skills, and have experience of service development and training. A background in cytogenetic and/or cytogenomic analysis would be a distinct advantage, however as cross-training and cross site working becomes further embedded in the team we envisage that the role will also involve a significant contribution to molecular services, as well as emerging molecular karyotyping technologies. A broad range of experience of different genomic technologies would therefore be extremely welcome.
We are happy to consider appointment of individuals who are not yet State Registered but are currently on a recognised programme of training that will lead to registration in the near future. We would also be happy to consider applications from those with a relevant background and experience wishing to pursue a band 6 pre-registration scientist training programme, however, preference would be given to registered, or close to registration, clinical scientists in genomic medicine/cancer genomics.
