Summary

Salary: Band 6 £29,777 p.a. plus £5,417.41 contractual overtime. This gives a total annual salary including CPC Saturday working of £35,356.47 p.a.

The Council will also pay for drivers CPC course, as well as time.

41.5 Hours per week (37 hours per week plus 4.5 hours per week contractual overtime).

The Service:

The Waste Management service is part of the Housing, Neighbourhood and Building Services Directorate and is based at the Waste Collection Depot, 24-26 Alchorne Place, Portsmouth, PO3 5QL.

The waste collection team work to 'enable recycling and remove waste on collection day'. We manage a range of refuse and recycling services from our Alchorne Place depot. We service all households every week completing millions of collections every year. The work is carried out in all weathers.

What is the role?

This role works as part of a team to collect refuse and/or recycling materials from waste containers - kerbside, communal and bring banks sites. You may also deliver receptacles to customers. The service operates Monday to Friday from with an earliest start time of 5:30am.

You will be a qualified to LGV C level and have update to date CPC. You will drive a 26T Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) and may be required to drive other vehicles such as 7.5/12T food waste vehicles, vans and caged tippers. You may be required to work on all types of refuse and recycling collections. As the driver you will be supported by the loaders to ensure that you are able to operate the vehicle safely at all times. You will update collection feedback using an in-cab device - identifying issues with contamination or non-domestic waste and support the management of waste in line with the Council's waste collection policy.

You will support the loaders and other team colleagues to maintain a safe system of work - reporting any incident or near misses. You may be required to help loading and will need an understanding of manual handling. You will highlight issues with collections to the management team.

This can be a physical role and you will need to need to have the ability to carry out routine tasks within a team operation. Whilst most of your work is planned, the service has to manage unexpected issues on a daily basis - this can include vehicle breakdowns to traffic issues and plans have to be adjusted at short notice - you will play a part in supporting this to ensure service delivery.

You will be contracted to work on all bank holidays (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day if they fall on a weekday) and up to 3 Saturdays at Christmas. You will also be contracted to undertake your CPC training on a Saturday.

Who is the person?

You need to:

  1. Hold current LGV C level driving licence
  2. Hold an up to date CPC
  3. Hold a digital tacho card
  4. Be physically fit and have the ability to carry out routine tasks within a team operation
  5. Be able to use in cab device to read and record round information
  6. Be a good communicator as this is a customer facing role
  7. Have local geographical knowledge of Portsmouth
  8. Able to work with minimal supervision
  9. Have an understanding of Health and Safety legislation in relation to the workplace and around the vehicle including your responsibilities to highlight and report incidents, near misses
  10. Have an understanding of manual handling
  11. Have an understanding of working using risk assessments and safe systems of work at all times
  12. Have an understanding of different waste types and what constitutes contamination, or non domestic waste and carrying out collections in line with the Council's collection policy
  13. Have an understanding and experience in managing customer information, including personal and sensitive data in accordance with GDPR
