Summary

Unit: Collaboration between University of Dundee and GSK, Tres Cantos, Spain Contract type: Fixed-Term (One year)/ Full-time

Grade 6 (£28,929-30,619)

The Drug Discovery Unit (DOU) at the University of Dundee is globally recognised for its scientific excellence and delivery of new candidate drugs for infectious diseases. The DOU comprises over 130 highly skilled and motivated staff, spanning all core drug discovery disciplines and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

We have an exciting one year opening for an enthusiastic Research scientist to perform high-throughput cell-based screening assays for the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. Within the DOU we have extensive expertise in building cascades of cell-based assays that combine the high-throughput required to screening large compound collections with the physiological relevance required to progress compounds with confidence. We are now expanding our portfolio to include cryptococcosis and are building a team to develop a fit-for-purpose screening cascade as we have done in the past for kinetoplastid parasites. This work is part of Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation project and will be carried out in Tres Cantos (near Madrid, Spain), with GSK acting as the employer post recruitment. Full support will be provided for travel and accommodation (if relocation is required). This post provides an excellent opportunity to work at the interface of industry and academia and to gain experience in an industrial setting.

This post is being offered within Grade 6 of our pay scale (£28,929 - £30,619 annual salary) and is available immediately, with funding for the post currently available until 15 January 2025. We are seeking to fill the post by 1 May 2024 at the latest. The salary will be paid in Euros. Project supervision will be by Manu De Rycker (University of Dundee), the Principal Investigator responsible for this work.

Your priorities will include:

  • Screening of compound library collections in a high-throughput assay for Cryptococcus neoformans

  • Analysis of screening results and identification of hits of interest

  • Dose-response profiling of hits of interest in a high-throughput assay for Cryptococcus neoformans and potentially other secondary assays

  • Data analysis and generating electronic lab notebook entries for experiments

  • Data reporting to the project team

Who we're looking for:

  • BSc in a biology-related field, or equivalent University undergraduate degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience growing micro-organisms on solid and in liquid media (bacteria or yeast/fungi).

  • Willingness to work and live abroad (Spain) for up to one year and eligibility to work or obtain a working visa to work in Spain.

  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to work meticulously and follow standard operating protocols

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to be proactive, productive and to work effectively in a team
