Summary


Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated radiographers with an interest in mammography to join our hard working and friendly team in this busy Breast Imaging Unit.

Full training to complete the Professional Practice in Mammography course will be given to the successful applicant.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential as is the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment. You must be comfortable working under pressure, ‘multi-tasking’ and liaising with multi-disciplinary teams. The strongest resource we have is the team, who are enthusiastic, friendly and highly skilled and comprise Radiographer’s, Assistant Practitioners Radiologists, Breast Care nurses and Advanced Practitioners. This is underpinned by a commitment to continuing professional development for all staff and actively encourages involvement in training and audit.

This post includes involvement in breast screening clinics at St Georges Hospital and the 6 satellite screening units around South West London along with participation in Assessment and Symptomatic clinics. It is therefore essential that you are able to travel to any of these sites and are resident within reasonable travelling time of both St. George’s Hospital and our remote site locations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Work as an autonomous practitioner performing a range of specialist mammography procedures that includes a high volume workload, ensuring production of high quality diagnostic images whilst working under pressure within tight time constraints with the aim of keeping repeat images below the National guidelines of 3%.
2. Assess and evaluate special needs of individual clients and adapt positioning technique and procedures to their clinical need in line with professional knowledge. This can involve overcoming barriers to understanding, such as mental health, language or disability problems.
3. Adapt difficult techniques to achieve optimum results in assessment clinics whilst supporting the patient often during highly emotional and distressing circumstances.
4. Document clinical observations and use own judgement, based on appropriate level of professional knowledge and skills, to clinically recall clients for further assessment.
5. Act as an Operator/ Practitioner under the IR(ME)R 2017 Radiation Regulations by clinically justifying mammography.
6. Be responsible for ensuring the principles of ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) are adhered to rigorously i.e. in practice ensuring a high quality diagnostic image using the lowest practicable radiation dose.
7. Be responsible for analysing and approving diagnostic images for the detection and assessment of breast pathologies.
8. Responsibility for transporting self between main hospital base and remote x-ray screening sites.
9. Communicate delicate & complex information to clients/patients, who have just had a diagnosis of cancer made, which requires empathy and reassurance, to a diverse community overcoming any barriers to understanding due to language, disability or mental health.
10. Communicate effectively with staff within and outside the organisation to ensure smooth operation of service.
11. Ensure correct identification and information regarding the client/patient and their examination is recorded accurately
12. Be fully competent in the operation of quality assurance software and other associated computerised systems, analysing results and performing any remedial action as appropriate whilst liaising with the QA Radiographer.
13. Work within a multi-disciplinary specialist team to promote the provision of healthcare advice and support to clients.
14. Be responsible for the overall care of clients attending for screening and
15. To work in assessment clinics within the National Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic out-patient clinics.
16. Taking part in the daily, weekly and monthly quality assurance checks performed on equipment and documenting results and reviewing, identifying any discrepancies, informing the QA Radiographer and taking any necessary remedial action required.
17. Take due care of all equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the Superintendent Radiographer and perform any trouble-shooting tests to determine the need for an engineer, as requested.
18. Organise the agreed daily workload on remote x-ray screening sites to include organisation of supplies, administration and co-ordination of relevant paperwork together with any re-bookings, as well as dealing with complaints and compliments as outlined in Clinical Governance guidelines with help from other health care professionals and senior staff as appropriate,
19. Liaise with colleagues to re-organise the workload in the event of a machine breakdown and the co-ordination of any rebooking of appointments.
20. Set high standards and motivate less experienced staff and to provide them with guidance, support and supervision.
21. To participate in the supervision of Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and other health care professionals as part of a National Post Graduate Training Centre.
22. Participate actively in Clinical Audit programmes as appropriate to the grade.
23. Participate in Research and Development activities within the department as appropriate.
24. Adhere to National and Quality Assurance protocols and guidance in accordance with the National Health Breast Screening Programme.
25. Maintain expert knowledge in specialist area by continuing professional development in accordance with the requirements of the Health Professions Council.
26. Use evidence based practice, audits and published research to improve own practice.
27. Undertake mandatory training and study days together with up-date training courses required for the role.
28. To undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent
29. with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service.
30. Provide general assistance and flexibility to ensure the smooth running of the department.
31. Ensure the Radiation Regulations – IR(ME)R 2017) and Manual Handling regulations (1992) are adhered to.
32. Be responsible for the Health, Safety and Welfare of self and others in compliance with the Health and Safety Regulations (1974) and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations (1998).
33. To ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act (1998) and its amendments.
