Summary

This post is a 1 year fixed term with a view to a substantive post becoming available in the future. We are also advertising for a permanent substantive post at the same time to replace one of our existing consultants who is due to leave soon. We would also like to expand the team further with this appointment. There is flexibility in working patterns with the option to work LTFT if required.

The post will be to join the other 8 other consultants: Dr Markus Gess, Dr Helen Matthews, Dr Ralph Greaves, Dr Rishi Goel, Dr Christos Christodoulou, Dr Jonathan Nolan (Clinical Lead), Dr Yasmin Pasha and Dr Ilia Sergeev in Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Endoscopy. The existing consultants are keen for the candidate to work to their strengths and support a role (or develop) in a subspecialist area according to the candidates strengths and future leadership roles are encouraged and well supported.

The post holder is expected to provide a first class service in gastroenterology/hepatology and endoscopy supported by junior medical staff. The post holder will undertake outpatient clinics (and supervise registrar and SHO clinics) and endoscopy sessions mainly at Kingston Hospital but potentially also at other sites in the locality as service demands require. The post holder will work closely with other medical and surgical colleagues to provide a seamless service especially for cancer patients and patients referred under the cancer access targets.

The hospital now has a brand-new JAG accredited, state of the art endoscopy unit with 3 rooms and trans-nasal endoscopy suite. We perform approximately 8000 upper and lower GI endoscopies each year, using Fujinon high resolution scopes and has a comprehensive endoscopy reporting tool designed to facilitate GRS reporting. The endoscopy department performs a full range of procedures including oesophageal stenting and is due to transition ERCP at Kingston from St Georges hospital. The service division between inpatient and outpatient endoscopy allows easy access to endoscopy for inpatients and outpatient lists that can run in parallel.

The work is based at Kingston Hospital, with clinics taking place in the main outpatient department and outpatient endoscopy which has recently moved to a brand-new state-of-the-art endoscopy unit located within the main hospital site. At present some outpatient consultations are performed remotely by telephone with adequate working space and IT support provided.
