Job Title: 
Personal Support Assistant for a young man with PMLD and complex health needs.
  
Hours of work: 
We are looking to recruit Full and Part-time Personal Support Assistants who are able to work on a flexible rota basis to cover the following hours:
 
08:00 to 16:00 – Monday to Saturday
21:00 to 07:00 – Two nights per week
 
Salary:
£14.00 per hour, enhanced on Bank Holidays

Job Purpose:
We are looking for carers to accompany and support our son during the day at school and during school holidays. He has profound and multiple learning difficulties and very complex medical needs and the role requires someone who is quick thinking, has initiative and good values. In addition to the day hours, you will be required to cover two 10 hour waking nights on a rota basis.
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, support health care needs and provide companionship and work in a fully supportive environment.
You will need common sense and have a can-do attitude, be able to react quickly and responsibly to care requirements and independently follow complex care plans, undertake complex clinical care tasks, work through therapy programmes, provide support of his health and care needs including tracheostomy, ventilator management, colostomy care and medication administration.  You will be expected to provide the highest standard of personal care and provide emotional and social support. 
Alongside this you will be expected to be truly committed to the rights and independence for disabled people and will need to take a person-centred approach to supporting our son. 
The aim of the support is to ensure that he can live happily and safely with his independence and involvement, in activities supported as much as is possible and appropriate within his best interests. This wish should be respected at all times.
 
Full in-depth training will be given to fulfil this role.
  
Accountable to: Employer on behalf of the client
  
 Duties:
·       Tracheostomy care and management
·       Ventilation management – CPAP
·       Colostomy management
·       Fluid balance recording
·       Accurate record keeping
·       Moving and Handling 
·       Skin integrity
         Administering medication via gastro jejunostomy tube
·       Gastro - Jejunostomy feeding tube management
·       Epilepsy management
·       Physiotherapy  - Chest and limb management
·       To support our son with his school life

You will be required to undergo a full enhanced DBS at the cost to the employer
 
A full contract will be issued but you will be required to successfully complete all training and the required 12 weeks probation period.

You are not required to have any formal qualifications for this role, but you are required to have an eagerness to learn and to keep an open mind throughout. Full training will be provided by regulated nurse/ training providers.
  
Responsibilities:
Maintaining health and wellbeing:  constant monitoring and supervision whilst on duty. The competent undertaking of all required clinical and non-clinical (bathing, dressing etc).  tasks as trained, in line with the care plan and supported by another carer or parent.
 
Maintaining equipment: Cleaning thoroughly all medical equipment, changing syringes, cleaning suction machines, ventilator circuits, nebuliser sets, cleaning wheelchair, washing covers, slings and glide sheets.
 
Night shifts to include light domiciliary tasks - washing clothes / bedding, keeping medication prep areas clean and safe, bathroom and bedroom areas clean and tidy.

Working as part of a team: respect for other team members, attending required training, team meetings and supervisions.
  
Confidentiality: respect the privacy of the person and family you are working with. You will maintain a professional approach at all times.
  
Attitude: PA must have a professional attitude at all times and respect the formal agreement of the contract.
 
Independent, safe and responsible worker: You must understand your role and must feel confident to ask when unsure. By always listening to instructions and requests you will be supported to interpret them correctly.
  
Personal support assistants should also respect the relationships with other household members, family, visitors and staff within the educational establishment.
