The Trainee Project officer will work alongside the Research and Development Control Manager and Technical and Operations Manager to gain on the job training in all aspects of development control and archaeology. The role may require some offshore work. Training and PPE will be provided where required.
Key roles and responsibilities:
To partake in all training required by MSDS Marine in order to support the successful completion of daily duties. To understand and work in line with heritage legislation, policy, regulations standards and best practice guidance. To maintain a friendly and professional manner during all work activities. To complete work packages allocated by managers and directors which may include, but are not limited to:
• Undertaking research and desk studies relating to marine archaeology and prehistoric landscapes, including data collection from repositories (such as HERs and Record Offices), researching from published sources, and preparing reports
• Undertaking reviews of offshore geophysical data
• Inputting into documents to support development work such as Written Schemes of Investigation and Method Statements
• Using GIS packages for data analysis and illustration production
Specific work packages will remain flexible and will depend on the nature of live MSDS Marine projects at the time of the placement. The post holder will discuss the scope of work packages with managers and ensure they understand what is expected for each package. The post holder will ensure that all projects are carried out in accordance with the MSDS Marine health and safety policy and project-specific risk assessments. The post holder will carry out any other duties which MSDS Marine may require from time to time and to abide by the general ethos of MSDS Marine.
Demonstrable experience and interest in archaeology or environmental and/or marine management.
Negotiable between the hours of 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday.
NMW + £600 p/a

MSDS Marine will support the post holder to complete relevant qualifications and accreditations including accreditation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. New starters are provided with an initial training plan to help develop their technical competence and career progression is discussed in regular meetings with their mentor.
Each training task will be taught as a work package, including an introduction to relevant legislation, policy, standards and guidance, followed by training in completion of the task itself. This may include desk-based assessment, written schemes of investigation, method statements and protocol for archaeological discoveries training. Training relating to specific types of heritage assets will also be given, focusing on shipwrecks, aviation remains and submerged prehistoric sites and landscapes. Additionally, use of GIS will form part of the training programme.
Historic England has parttnered with Intuitive Thinking Skills to deliver the key Wrap Around Skills and Development Training for this scheme as set out by the DWP. This orgaisation will provide both face to face and e-learning modules that will complement the employees learning styles over a 12 week period. You will be provided with a personal mentor who will deliver your wrap around training and be on hand persoanl and welbeing development.
