The Trainee Project officer (Engagement) will work alongside the Heritage and Systems Manager to gain on the job training in all aspects of marine archaeology public engagement and outreach.
Key roles and responsibilities:
To partake in all training required by MSDS Marine in order to support the successful completion of daily duties. To understand and work in line with heritage legislation, policy, regulations standards and best practice guidance. To maintain a friendly and professional manner during all work activities. To complete work packages allocated by managers and directors which may include, but are not limited to, delivery of public engagement programmes, development of opportunities for online social media engagement and school engagement visits.
The post holder will discuss the scope of work packages with managers and ensure they understand what is expected for each package;
The post holder will ensure that all projects are carried out in accordance with the MSDS Marine health and safety policy and project-specific risk assessments;
The post holder will carry out any other duties which MSDS Marine may require from time to time and to abide by the general ethos of MSDS Marine.
Demonstrable experience and interest in archaeology or environmental and/or marine management.
Negotiable between the hours of 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday. Some out of hours or weekend work may be required.
NMW + £600 p/a

Historic England has partnered with Intuitive Thinking Skills to deliver the key Wrap Around Skills and Development Training for this scheme as set out by the DWP. This organisation will provide both face to face and e-learning modules that will complement the employees learning styles over a 12 week period. You will be provided with a personal mentor who will deliver your wrap around training and be on hand personal and wellbeing development.
MSDS Marine’s training and development programme is driven by the requirement to ensure that all staff have the skills and abilities to respond to the needs of our clients and our business and to enable MSDS Marine to meet its strategic goals. We encourage employees to take responsibility for their own personal and continuing professional development throughout their career with MSDS Marine.
MSDS Marine will support the post holder to complete relevant qualifications and accreditations including accreditation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. New starters are provided with an initial training plan to help develop their technical competence and career progression is discussed in regular meetings with their mentor.
Each training task will be taught as a work package, including an introduction to relevant legislation, policy, standards and guidance, followed by training in completion of the task itself. This will include planning and delivery of public engagement initiatives, the development of opportunities for online engagement and public speaking techniques. Training relating to specific types of heritage assets will also be given, focusing on shipwrecks, historic vessels and submerged prehistoric sites and landscapes.
