Trainee Patient Services Assistant:

This is a new role that has been created to provide the experience first-hand the start of a patient journey into primary care and provide the foundations for a progressive career.

An opportunity to work with a variety of team members i.e. GPs, Nurse, Reception, Managers to carry out work experience in a patient facing role and will give young people the chance to develop skills such as face to face and telephone customer service skills (inc. proactive promotion of new services i.e. NHS App, Online Booking, eConsults, Video Consultations, COVID vaccinations etc).

Additionally, there is an opportunity to learn some of the fundamental and basic skills of administration associated with patient care. We will work with individuals to correlate any personal and professional areas of development in line with placement requirements.

This role will develop skills to:
-Interact with patients to provide and process information in response to enquiries, concerns, and requests about NHS/practice services
-Ensure that all patients have a positive experience; work as part of the reception team in a professional manner to provide high quality reception, administration and support services to all clients, visitors, GPs, and Allied Health Professionals
-Follow all relevant standard operating procedures, policies, and charters to ensure working in an efficient and courteous manner at all times
-Provide a professional call handling service and associated administration duties
-Embed and sustain an ethos of care navigation throughout the team
Providing advice and guidance and signposting patients to the most appropriate clinician/service
-Record all essential information accurately.

This role will also encourage observation and collaborative working with peers to develop relevant skills as a Trainee Patient Service to help:
-Receive and greet patients, i.e. clients and visitors to the Practice, in a welcoming and professional manner in line with the Modality welcoming procedure and to act as a point of contact between patients, clients, healthcare professionals, visitors, the GPs, Partners and Practice Staff
-To accurately maintain and update both computerised and manual filing systems, including: setting up new patient records on the clinical system, updating of patient details, entry of identified clinical data (including read codes) to medical records, electronic scanning of correspondence and allocation to patient records
-To ensure reception, waiting areas and clinical rooms are maintained in a clean and tidy state, preparing, and tidying rest and meeting areas when requested.

The following skills are essental:
-Good communication and listening skills
-Basic telephone call handling, computer literate i.e. MS Word, Email etc.

The following qualifications are essential: GCSE Maths and English or NVQ equivalent.

The following personal qualities are essential:
-Good tream player, enthusiastic to learn, develop and grow, polite and has initiative.

5hrs per day, Monday to Friday. Hours to be discussed at interview

National Minimum Wage

Line management support will be provided daily (as required). At the start of the placement, each Employee will meet with their designated line manager/mentor to set goals and objectives to achieve over the 6-month placement. These will be monitored throughout the duration of the placement.
A log of key skills and competencies will also be set up and will require each employee to own and take point to ensure this us kept up to date.

Half-way through the placement, goals and objectives and skills log will be reviewed and key achievements will be signed off. Any areas for further development and or concentration will also be discussed and agreed.
At the end of the placement, goals, objectives, and skills log will be reviewed holistically and the placement will be signed off. An opportunity will also be available for the employee to obtain support with looking for long-term work, including career advice. Support with CV-building, mock-interviews etc will also be provided.
