These duties and tasks may vary depending upon the needs of each service area to ensure the effective running of the service however these tasks should be non-clinical and within the scope of the employees experience and responsibility.
Supporting recreational activities Social engagement
Management of patients property where appropriate.
To assist patients with their laundry.
To support patients in making their own beds.
To assist in the preparation and assistance of meals including completion of menus.
To support patients with snacks and refreshments when required
Checking and managing delivery of stores.
To assist in the provision of a clean and therapeutic environment by providing clinical housekeeping assistance to the Nursing/ Occupational Therapy staff when needed by cleaning (in line with infection control standards), patient care aides on a daily basis and ensuring bedrooms are clear of clinical waste / equipment and items which are not managed by Interserve.
Administrative tasks to support the Ward Administrator
Managing the site PPE stock system including stock takes
Supporting patient contact with family through digital or other means e.g. FaceTime
Mattress audits
Environmental checks and liaison with Interserve where necessary reporting areas of concern to the Nurse in Charge Ward Manager
Cleaning of medical devices
To report any concerns regarding patients welfare directly to the Nurse in Charge.
To comply with the guidelines of the health and safety policies operating within the Trust.

Full flexibility required to work 5 out of 7 and early, late or night shifts


Intense induction/Training package, recognising the ASWs may have minimal/no work experience in a care setting, this would need to include all compulsory training and an introduction to the NHS, the Trust, the role of the ASW and the career pathway/progression - to be led by the Kickstart Coordinator who would be an experience clinical member of staff
6 month job plan
Functional Skills in Maths and English for those who do not already have this
Peer support sessions in the form of regular peer meetings, to be led and coordinated by dedicated resource to link with each other and share experiences/challenges
1 development day per month, development offer to be designed and resourced possible funded if external development required
Nominated mentor/contact who would be a Band 3 or Band 4 Health Care Support Worker or Associate, to work as a buddy system we need to be clear what this will look like in practice
Shadowing opportunities across other services of interest to the ASWs
Candidates are recruited as an ASW on the Kickstart programme for 6 months, during this time we will support all candidates who do not already hold Maths and English qualifications to complete their functional skills qualifications, enabling them to meet the minimum entry criteria for an apprenticeship. During this period the ASW will be supernumerary. We aim to build a competency framework/skills passport to capture their development, skills and competencies, and at the end of the 6 months the individuals would be privy to a fast track recruitment process.
At the end of the 6 months, all candidates will have a guaranteed interview for a Band 2 Apprenticeship HSW role where they will undertake a L2 Health & Social Care Apprenticeship includes Care Certificate. An enhanced DBS will be required for this post, and the successful employees will be expected to self fund this, however it can come out of their salary over a 3 month period.
