The Role:

We have long term placement opportunities available Band 5 Physiotherapist atBerkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, specifically providing the following:

  • To provide mental health physiotherapy services to patients on the older adult wards who have mental health and physical health needs.
  • To provide the day-to-day Physiotherapy input within the multi-disciplinary team on the designated older adult wards at Prospect Park Hospital.
  • To contribute actively to planning, evaluating and development of the service.
  • To provide leadership through supervision of physiotherapy students as required.
  • Ensure effective liaison with other services within the locally including voluntary, statutory and community resources, as well as social services.

Prospect Park Hospital is the main hospital for people in Berkshire who suffer from mental illness.

The hospital provides a number of admission wards, a therapeutic day service, a specialist unit for people with learning disabilities, specialist wards for older people, and both high dependency and rehabilitation wards.

The new, 203 bed Prospect Park Hospital in Reading provides care on behalf of the Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust for the acute mentally ill, the elderly mentally infirm, intensive care and rehabilitation patients and those with learning disabilities, accommodating their privacy and dignity at a level never before achieved in Berkshire.

Main Responsibilities :


  • To demonstrate a high level of skill in assessment and treatment of patients on Rowan and Orchid Ward, in accordance with a needs-led, patient-centred approach and in line with local objectives.
  • To contribute physiotherapy skills to the multi-disciplinary ward teams.
  • To be active in providing patient-centred physiotherapy interventions including individual and group work and treatment plans. And carrying out specialist physiotherapy assessments using a range of assessment tools.
  • To monitor and evaluate the outcomes of interventions and contribute to evaluation and audit of the service as a whole.
  • To contribute to the development of Trust initiatives and goals, such as the falls prevention strategy.
  • To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice to carers and patients on lifestyle changes and the completion of physiotherapy exercises.

Professional :

  • To develop one’s own professional and specialist skills and knowledge at the competency level of a Band 6 physiotherapist.
  • To keep abreast of developments pertaining to the provision of physiotherapy within mental health services and related care.
  • To take a lead role in day to day matter relating to AHPs within the older adult mental health services.
  • To represent AHPs at multi-disciplinary meeting, and attend other professional meetings when required.
  • To enhance standards of care by developing models of physiotherapy practice, promoting evidence based practice, participating in audit and clinical governance projects as required.
  • To maintain regular contacts with Locality and Trust Professional Leads for Therapists.
