Saint-Gobain designs, manufactures and distributes construction materials and solutions, which are key ingredients in the wellbeing of each of us and the future of all. Local Merchant Group are a division on Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Ltd. and is made up of 8 key brands with 56 branches throughout the UK; Gibbs and Dandy, JP Corry, Roger W Jones, Matthew Charlton, Benchmark Building Supplies, Chadwicks, Normans and DHS.
As a Builders Merchant, it’s our job to give advice on and sell building products & services to our customers - whether they’re about to start a big project, or they are picking up the bits and bobs they need along the way.
Because our customer base is so varied, from large house builders to DIY enthusiasts, you’ll find that two days are never the same - you’ll hear about some pretty weird and wonderful projects too!
Although our brands all have their own customers, specialisms and personalities, we’re all part of the Local Merchant Group because we share the same goal: To be the most trusted merchant in town. For us, this means putting our customers and local communities at the centre of everything we do, so they can rely on us to help them get the job done.
Many of our customers have customers of their own relying on them, so the trust we build with them is really important. A lot of this trust comes from getting the basics right - things like having the right products in stock, pricing fairly and delivering our products on time and in full. To strengthen this trust we should always aim to meet and exceed their expectations, such as being honest and not over-promising, taking time to build relationships and adding personal touches (how great does it feel when a business remembers you!)
What will you be doing in this role?
Over the course of your placement with us, you’ll be based in one of our branches, experiencing first-hand the principle of great customer service. As you go, you’ll get to grips with our business, learning about our customers and our products.
Day-to-day in this role, you can expect to be kept busy interacting with customers; answering queries, placing customer orders and handling sales. You’ll get the chance to learn about the products we sell, the importance of team work, health and safety and good housekeeping.

We understand that you may not have had the opportunity to support customers before, or had chance to present ideas in a workplace setting, we also know you may not have had much chance to develop your team working skills or to help drive a business forward. So, we are willing to work with you and help you develop, if you can show us that you are; willing to learn and present new ideas, happy to work together with colleagues and encourage others to do the same, able to make quick decisions and adapt to new ways of working.
Understandably it is also important that you are interested in, or have a passion for customer service, and getting your hands dirty. It is important that we offer opportunities to people who would specifically like to learn skills in this area, to aid their personal development.
Working between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm (Flexible, to be discussed at interview)

What will you learn in this role?
On a typical day you will be shadowing colleagues dealing with a number of our customers, and with time be able to offer advice and support. The day will be very busy, and you can expect a lot of banter with both your team and your customers as you work.
You will learn how to provide great service, and will get a chance to work as part of a team. You will develop skills in communication and sales, both face to face and over the phone.
In 6 months’ time you can expect to know the basics of merchanting, the importance of Health and Safety, customer service and our computer system for taking customer orders and payment.
What support can you expect to receive?
During the time you’ll also learn more about career development, CVs and interviews to best prepare you for the world of work. You can also participate in various online learning to assist with product knowledge, but by enlarge it will be through on-the-job experience.
You’ll have opportunities each week to reflect on what you’ve learnt, and will also have reviews at month 1, 3 and 6 to see how else we can support you.

Support in doing the day-to-day job - learning, from your manager and peers, how to do work that you may have never thought possible
