Onion Collective

This role will support our work at the Watchet Visitor Centre, and at East Quay, Watchet. This will include welcoming visitors and talking to the general public about their visit to Watchet. This will include working in the shop at the Visitor Centre, including operating cash and card till. there will be times when you are working alone in the shop, so you will need to be responsible and capable. It may also include helping to cash up at the end of each day, general administrative duties to help with the running of the shop, and other tasks as required. Work at our East Quay site will include welcoming visitors, operating tills, and other duties as required. It will be a varied role, and a willing hands-on approach will be required.

We have had enough of sitting around talking about what is wrong, and together with the community, we want to build a plan for our hometown. That plan includes building an art gallery, artist studios, a café and a shop – the East Quay development in Watchet, and opening a cutting-edge bio-manufacturing facility on the old Paper Mill site, as well as running the Watchet Visitor Centre, and being involved with arts, education and social action projects.

We will expect a willing hands-on approach to a variety of tasks and responsibilities and an enthusiasm for getting stuck in and helping out wherever is needed. Candidates must be comfortable communicating with the public and with suppliers, including having a confident and friendly phone manner and in person. They should have a good standard of written English skills and be comfortable using Microsoft Office Programmes, including Excel and Word. The role will require an open, team-focused approach and willingness to work alongside others at different levels of authority and skills. The candidate must be organised and systematic and capable of researching, comparing and planning the purchase of products to sell in East Quay shop. Candidates must be able to follow and implement systems, such as taking bookings, keeping control of stock, administrative and financial tasks. Candidates must be honest and trustworthy. Experience within a retail environment and/or public facing/events role would be a plus.

6.25 hours for 4 days a week, or as otherwise arranged with candidate.


Skills and personal development training will take place throughout the 6 months and will be provided at a local level by the employing organisation and partners. In addition, this role will be part of a national peer learning community alongside similar roles based within community businesses across England. Post-holders will be supported to learn on the job by the team at Onion Collective, including a mentoring relationship with a Director if appropriate.
