Southampton Education School is a flourishing centre of international research and teaching excellence. It has a strong programme of initial teacher education including primary and secondary and PGCE, an undergraduate programme in Education Studies, and a full portfolio of Masters and Doctoral degrees and professional development opportunities.
The person appointed to this position will lead and teach on the Secondary Computer Science PGCE Programme as well as contribute to other Programmes across the School. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research across the School and work within an appropriate Research Centre to produce research that is of excellent quality.
The Secondary PGCE programmes at the University of Southampton deliver Initial Teacher Education within the University and work in partnership with over 100 local secondary schools. Our programme provides thorough preparation for teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards, while our research-led philosophy develops teachers whose independent and creative approach brings about high quality learning and teaching. We are seeking to appoint a Computer Science expert who has recent and relevant secondary teaching experience and who would be able to design and lead pedagogical sessions in a cross-curricular context as well as for Computer Science Specialist teaching sessions. As well as planning and teaching sessions at the University they would also be expected to visit trainees in schools in order to monitor and moderate progress. There would also be an expectation that the appointee would be able to contribute to other areas of Initial Teacher Education as required and as appropriate to their skills and experiences. The post includes designing and leading the Computer Science PGCE Programme as well as teaching, visiting trainees in their placement school and observing and assessing the quality of their teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards. The role requires liaison with trainees’ mentors in partnership schools and assessing trainees’ work at Masters level.
As a colleague on a Balanced Pathway, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to an appropriate Research Centre within the School of Education. They would bid for grants, undertake research and publish academically, and would be expected to work both independently and in collaboration with colleagues in their chosen areas of interest.
Working in collaboration with colleagues, you will have responsibility for:
PGCE Computer Science Course leadership and design, management and teaching as appropriate
Arranging and participating in observations at trainees’ placement schools in order to observe trainees teaching
Assessing trainee teachers in their teaching and written assignments.
Participating in Research – bidding, writing and collaborating
Maintaining records and paperwork as required
The role will therefore include regular travel to our network of placement schools.
This position requires DBS Clearance at an enhanced level; this would need to be obtained once the applicant is in post.
