This is a Mott MacDonald Bentley role, employed by Mott MacDonald.

Mott MacDonald Bentley is a joint venture business, established in 1999 between civil engineering contractor JN Bentley and global management consultancy, Mott MacDonald.

Mott MacDonald Bentley offers fully integrated design and build services to its clients, combining the contracting expertise of JN Bentley and the design specialisms of Mott MacDonald.

This role is employed by Mott MacDonald but will involve working across the joint venture business, both with Mott MacDonald and JN Bentley colleagues.

We have been appointed as a partner to Thames Water's 5-year AMP7 capital works programme and are looking for talented Design Leads with strong water/wastewater sector design experience to join our growing team. Your role as a Design Lead will be to work collaboratively with a Contracts Manager and Quantity Surveyor to deliver the design for a programme of projects, or a single large project.

Develop and lead your design team to successfully deliver projects and create a positive environment, where staff are engaged and able to reach their potential.
Form collaborative relationships with the MMB Contracts Manager and Quantity Surveyor, and the Thames Water programme team, and balance the competing tensions of time, cost and quality, to successfully deliver outcomes.
Provide clear and visible leadership to your project design team, including those working remotely from yourself.
Undertake line management for multiple staff, including being responsible for their welfare and development.

Lead the delivery of multi-disciplinary design for either water, or wastewater infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects.
Have strong technical skills to lead the development of affordable and low carbon solutions, including managing risk.
Deliver detailed design to meet the construction needs and Thames Water acceptance.
Drive an excellence culture in your team including supporting the Design Manager to recruit and address competency gaps.
Represent MMB in technical meetings with Thames Water to achieve acceptances.
Continually develop and challenge project delivery to improve our performance and provide positive challenges to your team to innovate and arrive at value driven designs.
Provide direction and oversight of project control processes, with an emphasis on planning and monitoring performance, to achieve time and cost requirements, minimise risk, and ensure the output complies with the required standards and quality requirements.

Positively engage with Thames Water to develop relationships and influence, enhance our reputation and point of difference, as well as seeking new opportunities.
Contribute to achieving high KPI scores.

Qualified design engineer (preferably Chartered or working towards chartership)
Experience of delivering the design for:
a programme of water, or wastewater, non-infrastructure and infrastructure projects; or
individual projects with a value greater than £5M.
Experience of successfully developing and managing design quality control processes.
An experienced leader of multidiscipline and diverse design teams, management of people and developing more junior staff.
Commercial awareness and demonstrable experience of the successful application of design project controls, with a proven record in delivering design projects to program, budget and quality requirements.
An understanding of procurement and construction.
Proactive approach and growth mindset, with an ability to adapt to changing scenarios.
Able to manage competing tensions for the benefit of developing better outcomes.
Understanding of designer's responsibilities under CDM.

MMB are an adopter of agile working and the role location is flexible. The role will require the Design Lead to attend some meetings and site visits in the Reading area.
