At the Animal and Plant Health Agency, we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.

This post is a Pathology Laboratory Science Team Leader, to provide scientific leadership to the Pathology and Animal Sciences Department containment laboratories to enable the delivery of statutory surveillance and policy driven research outcomes. To oversee and maintain quality accreditation (i.e. ISO17025, 9001 and GLP).
The roles will be based at Weybridge where the team is located. Once Covid restrictions are lifted the expectation is to return to normal office working.

Job description
Key areas of work include;

Scientific Leadership:
The jobholder will provide scientific & technical guidance and expertise to ensure timely delivery of the projects that underpin the pathology surveillance and research capability at APHA Weybridge.
Research responsibilities include coordinating the delivery of objectives required to meet work packages dedicated to the development of laboratory methods (molecular, microbiological and/or histopathology) for the detection and characterisation of endemic and exotic diseases. The jobholder will provide expertise and support and contribute to the experimental design, execution and scientific publications derived from this work.
Development, refinement and adoption of technologies to improve and broaden research and surveillance capability and optimise high throughput diagnostic testing.
Laboratory responsibilities include supervising and undertaking inspections (safety, quality and technical) and overseeing the organisation and implementation of proficiency testing schemes.
