The University of Portsmouth is a dynamic and ambitious institution with a track record of success. One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework and ranked in the top 150 in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

The School of the Environment, Geography and Geosciences (SEGG) is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed individual to the position of Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. It would be desirable if the candidate also had expertise in numerical modelling of ground engineering structures but this is not essential. The post holder may also be involved in the delivery of applied geoscience and geoscience courses more broadly and will be required to participate in UK and overseas field courses.

SEGG is renowned for expertise in the areas of applied geoscience including engineering geology, rock engineering, geological and environmental hazards and delivers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these specialist areas. You will join a vibrant multi-disciplined team of applied geoscientists and engineers who teach, research and innovate in conjunction with industrial partners on a variety of projects. Part of our medium-term strategy is to develop and deliver a new postgraduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering.

The School is based within the Faculty of Science and Health and holds strong teaching and research links with many collaborators both from within academia, industry and the public sector. The successful applicant will be passionate about education, research and innovation and be able to effectively articulate their contribution to delivering high quality services

The post holder will be required to design and deliver first class teaching and pastoral support to our students. Their teaching contribution will draw upon their specialist expertise as well as contributing to the broad coverage of provision across our courses, including fieldwork.

Although the post is available as either a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, only one appointment will be made. Please note each post has a different person specification / job description. You should also indicate in the ‘reasons for applying section’ whether you wish to be considered for the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position. The successful applicant will be appointed on the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.

For further information regarding this appointment, please contact Dr Michelle Hale (Head of School) via email: michelle.hale@port.ac.uk

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this level in this area.
