The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust

Consultant Head & Neck ENT Surgeon with an interest in malignant disease

Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust seeks to appoint a substantive consultant in Head & Neck ENT Surgery. The post is centred around Head & Neck (H&N) malignancy which will form the first part of the oncology surgery and departmental expansion with a second H&N post likely to be fully approved by the date of the interview.

The Head and Neck Directorate consist of 12 substantive consultants working within the Departments of ENT, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our existing Head & Neck team and the post holder will be expected to complement the department’s plans for expansion over the next few years. The Head & Neck ward has recently been relocated to a larger ward in the Heart & Lung centre. This modern area of the Trust is ideally designed for a Head & Neck service with a 4 bay HDU/Observation area and close proximity to Critical Care facilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with existing colleagues to build on the existing Head & Neck practice and will be encouraged to engage actively with the further development of the unit. The Head & Neck ENT service deals with all aspects of oropharyngeal/neck malignancies and has a full range of support including dedicated CNS nurses, SALT and Dietetics. The new appointees will be actively involved in the weekly MDT sessions contributing to the planning and management of all Head & Neck patients. There will be opportunities to drive forward and expand the scope of practice to include Trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS). The successful candidates will be given support to develop this service which is very much aligned to the Trust’s desire to expand the current Robotic surgery expertise. Major reconstructive surgery is carried out in conjunction with our microvascular Maxillofacial team when required.

The post-holder will complement the existing ENT consultant team of 11 across New Cross Hospital, Cannock Hospital and Russell’s Hall Hospital, Dudley. They will be expected to participate in a 1:14 general on call weekend rota in conjunction with Walsall and a 1:8 weekday rota covering New Cross only. The ENT Surgery department at New Cross has 3 specialist registrars, 2 Associate Specialists, 1 staff grade, 2 Clinical Fellows, 1 BST and 5 junior doctors. The consultants have lead roles across these trusts in many areas of sub-specialist practice.

The Directorate is proud of being able to serve its community by consistently modernising its service provision, and crucial to that is encouraging and supporting its consultants to innovate, progress and develop. We are seeking colleagues who are ambitious to achieve that and we are determined to provide an environment for their long term success.

The Trust has a reputation for delivering a high level of clinical care and we are the second largest Undergraduate Teaching Hospital in the region. We have long standing and excellent working relationships with our primary care colleagues and our commissioners. There is a strong teaching and research base.
