This post is part of an innovative and ongoing clinical specialty initiative which seeks to professionalise advanced airway skills and management of complex airway cases. In addition, this post allows individual to develop their own research and teaching skills and expertise in medical education.
This post is not recognised for training, therefore does not carry a national training number. This post is currently designated for anaesthetists who have completed recognised training programme leading to a certificate of completion of training (CCT) or equivalent and wish to develop further skills in complex airway management. Senior specialist trainees (ST6 and ST7) and have a particular interest in difficult airway management and medical education are also welcome to apply.
There have been significant advances in the management of patients with difficult airways. The recent national surveys demonstrate a deficiency in advanced airway skills training at higher level of training. The available opportunity, even in major tertiary teaching centres does not sustain to provide training and skills retention in advanced airway skills such as awake fibreoptic intubation, at risk extubation and airway ultrasound. Therefore, the way forward is to develop airway specialists with a targeted and structured training and clinical experience in the management of complex airway cases.
