The Medicines and Diagnostics Policy Unit sits within the Specialised Commissioning Directorate and oversees development of policy and strategy on a wide range of medicines and diagnostics issues on behalf of NHS England nationally. The team works closely with the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer and the Chief Scientific Officer. This role provides an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of policy development and strategy delivery in the health and social care system.
The remit of the team is to support and enable the fundamental transformation required to underpin implementation of the Long Term Plan for medicines and diagnostics.
The team maintains strong working relationships with teams across NHS England and NHS Improvement, and works in partnership in particular with the Strategic Finance Unit, Commercial team and Medical Directorate.
It also works with key partner organisations, such as the Care Quality Commission, the Department of Health, NICE, Health Education England and Public Health England. We work with partners in industry, academia and representative bodies.
More locally, the team works with Clinical Commissioning Groups, the regional medicines optimisation committees and Academic Health Science Networks to ensure that there is the right support available to commissioners and providers.
As Head of Medicines and Diagnostics Policy, the post holder will be a key part of a dynamic team responsible for developing policy and strategy that will shape the services available to patients now and in the future. The post-holder will be accountable to and work closely with the Director and Deputy Director of the unit as well as Chief Officers.
The post holder will act as the policy lead in key areas of medicines and diagnostics policy for NHS England, working alongside clinical and scientific leaders to provide expert advice and recommendations to the leadership of NHS England on high profile and sensitive issues.
The post holder will be part of the leadership team of the Medicines and Diagnostics Policy Unit.
He/She will provide leadership and management for a well performing team that is providing a core policy and strategy function to the wider organisation.
The team has a variety of skills, knowledge and experience and works on a range of national policy areas including: the uptake of best value biological medicines, low priority prescribing, medicines optimisation, prescribing practice following the re-scheduling of medicinal cannabis products and diagnostics provision and strategy.
