Summary

This critical role is as the lead technical architect for the ‘National Law Enforcement Data Programme’ (NLEDP), which is a major Government IT Programme to deliver the future ‘Law Enforcement Data Service’ as part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure As the Lead Technical Architect, you will work with the business and our technology partners to understand and translate business problems into deliverable and value for money technical designs. This is across a number of technology domains, some of which you may be considered a leader within and others you will need to be able to confidently represent.

You will lead the overall design and review processes for new solutions and technical services, build detailed plans for the integration and adoption of services, and support the broader architectural aims of the department. Areas that the Lead Technical Architect may be required to get involved in include:

• Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services

• Cloud Native and Serverless

• Collaboration

• Mobility

• Cyber Security

• Data Centre Hosting

Our technology landscape is varied and consists of the full range of services from legacy systems to container and serverless deployment patterns in public cloud.

Job description

What you will do day to day

• Working in the Infrastructure Architecture function of the National Law Enforcement Data Programme you’ll help to provide the bridge between the requirements team and application developers to ensure the department can exploit the latest technologies in a manner that addresses its wider requirements

• Support the preparation and completion of high- and low-level designs

• Promote and develop the reuse of agreed patterns and approaches and support the development of new variants. Recommend security controls and identify solutions that support a business objective

• Advise on infrastructure considerations such as deployment patterns and product choices

• Collaborate with colleagues across all the NLEDP architecture teams and particularly the Security Architecture function to ensure that agreed designs are subject to end-to-end assurance

• Keep up-to-date on developments in the technology industry to ensure that the technology landscape is kept in line with industry and government standards

• Provide specialist advice and recommend approaches across teams and various stakeholders. This will include advising on key infrastructure related technologies and assessing the risk associated with proposed changes.

You will be someone who:

• Effectively translates business requirements into standards, patterns and approaches to enable the safe exploitation of current and emerging technologies

• Manages stakeholders’ expectations and is flexible, pragmatic and able to reach consensus

• Designs secure infrastructure architectures through the application of patterns and principles, to meet user needs whilst managing risk, complexity and cost

• Identifies infrastructure issues in system architectures

• Can make and guide effective architectural decisions, explaining clearly how decisions have been reached

• Advises on developments in technology

• Understands and communicates the impact of infrastructure components, patterns and trends on existing and future designs and systems

• Can demonstrate great partnership skills, in particular the ability to build effective partnerships and trust with peers across the technology organisation

• Has good communication skills, verbal and written, and a good understanding of the use of different channels and formats for different audiences

• Is technology-agnostic and possesses broad knowledge of a range of technologies

• Works with a diverse team across multiple locations

• Wider Portfolio infrastructure architecture teams

• Commercial teams to support security vendor selection

• Technical Architects (including 3rd party suppliers) by providing security advisory services on solution options and designs for hardware, software, outsourced services and infrastructure

Responsibilities

Essential Skills:

You’ll have a demonstrable passion for Technical Architecture, with the following skills or strong experience in:

• Evidencing strong technical leadership qualities, with a passion for delivering leading edge designs, and inspiring a culture of technical excellence and innovative solutions

• Navigating the complex landscapes of technologies, 3rd party suppliers, internal and cross-government teams across multiple projects

• Anticipating and advising on future technology that present opportunities for the product or programme

• Managing and delivering complex technology solutions within time, cost and quality targets

• Defining, owning and contributing to the technical roadmap and strategy

• Demonstrating a detailed knowledge of technical requirements to implement, design and manage associated technologies

• Having a strong preference for the leverage of community integrated market products wherever technical and security considerations allow
