A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

We are advertising for two different Junior Pharmacist roles: On-call Junior Pharmacist and Shift Working Junior Pharmacists.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK with clinical care and services spanning across three hospitals (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital), with a pharmacy department at each site. We have an established electronic prescribing system in place across most wards and have automated systems in our dispensaries and some clinical areas. Both the Trust and the pharmacy department embrace innovation and we welcome ambitious members to join our dynamic team.

Pharmacy staff provide an array of services to the Clinical Management Groups and work closely with medical and nursing staff. Our pharmacy team is friendly and progressive and aims to provide a high level of clinical expertise to patients. We are keen to improve our services and develop our staff to better support the Trust and service users.

We provide a comprehensive induction and training period to train you to provide an effective clinical pharmacy service. You will be expected to work closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team including established medical, nursing and pharmacy teams to proactively undertake medicines reconciliation, review prescribing, medicines optimisation and clinically screen discharge prescriptions. You will have the opportunity to enhance your clinical skills through ward based training, ward based assessments and clinical teaching seminars. Optimal patient care will be your priority and you will aim to ensure timely, effective and safe pharmaceutical care is consistently provided.

Previous hospital pharmacy experience is not essential as full training will be provided, however an awareness of hospital pharmacy practice is desirable.

Junior Pharmacists with On-call responsibilities

As a junior pharmacist with on-call responsibilities, you will be integral in providing a 24 hour pharmacy service across all three hospitals by partaking in service provision over extended opening hours. You will work a variety of on-call shifts including evenings, weekends and nights where you will provide a core pharmacy service including; advising medical and nursing staff, processing urgent discharges, supplying emergency medication, releasing unlicensed medication and processing adult and paediatric parenteral nutrition.

As an on-call junior pharmacist you will follow a rotational programme gaining experience in a range of specialties across the 3 sites including:

Emergency and Specialist Medicine
Emergency and General Surgery/Orthopaedics
Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
Respiratory Medicine Oncology/Haematology/Aseptics
Renal and Transplant Medicine
Paediatrics and Women’s Health
Regional Medicines Information Centre

Shift Working Junior Pharmacists

As a shift working junior pharmacist you will build on your existing skills in a fast paced acute environment. You will play an integral part of our plan to expand our staff base to provide a 7 day pharmacy ward service. You will work as part of a team working shifts between 8am and 8pm on a rolling 3 days on, 3 days off rota. During these hours you will be a key player in the wider multi-disciplinary team based on admissions wards by providing a vital ward based pharmacy service.

You will either be based in emergency medicine at the Leicester Royal Infirmary or at the cardio-respiratory admissions unit at the Glenfield Hospital.

Further Information

The successful candidates will have well developed communication skills, a desire for self-development and organisational skills. You will thrive on the opportunities and challenges provided by a busy and supportive work environment.

*** There may also be the opportunities for both on-call foundation pharmacists and shift working foundation pharmacists to study for a clinical pharmacy diploma at De Montfort University. You would be allocated a personal tutor to guide your development and would be supervised and supported by the ward and dispensary based pharmacy teams.***
