Location : Base office is flexible at any of the national offices – Belfast, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, London (Barkingside) or Crawley. Regular local and national travel will be required

We have an exciting role with one of our clients, a leading children’s charity, for a Service Designer. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing the end-to-end journey of a service. This helps users to complete their goals and the charity to achieve their expected outcome. Your work may involve the creation of, or change to, transactions, products and content across both digital and offline channels, provided by different parts of the charity.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Develop new or iterated services to meet user needs, based on evidence that has been gathered from a variety of existing and new sources, including primary research, existing evidence and organisational goals
  • To have a strong focus on the user needs, and ensure that every aspect of product development is user-centric
  • Identify where separate interactions with children’s social care should act as one service that meets that need
  • Make good and trusted decisions and recognise when to escalate or request further guidance and support
Key Activities :
  • Work on defined problem statements and design challenges throughout the product lifecycle, with particular responsibility for the early stages (discovery alpha)
  • Analyse failure within services and identify the root cause
  • Recognise opportunities for cost reduction and improvement within an existing service
  • Arrange disparate interactions into rational user journeys within a product, group of products or overall service
  • Look for commonalities in activities across services where products could be made
  • Understand the existing supporting system of a service and design targeted improvements to that system to accommodate the new service – both digital and process based
  • Create and rapidly iterate service prototypes
  • Identify and design new cross-sector service patterns and standards
  • Collaborate on designs with analysts and developers
  • Explain design decisions and be able to represent a service at a service assessment
  • Contribute to the development of design concepts
  • Interpret evidence-based research and incorporate this into your work
  • Work within communities of practice, talking about our client and their work, bringing back insights from other charities, digital businesses and government that will improve daily work and processes
  • Be aware of new ideas, changes and methodologies within the digital community, ensuring at any available chance you are expanding and building on the teams skill set
  • Lead team development and engagement activities
  • Working closely with other external digital services or agencies when the need arises
Education / Knowledge :
  • Evidence of professional knowledge of service design
  • Evidence of a continued path of learning, whether through boot camps, hack day online learning or career development
  • A portfolio of previous relevant work
Required Experience / Skills :
  • Demonstrable experience of sketching and prototyping, including offline and online, e.g. using Marvel, Invision or Sketch
  • Explaining design ideas and concepts in an understandable manner
  • Experience of interpreting user research into user stories and acceptance criteria
  • The ability to demonstrate experience of designing form and function together in a service or user journey
  • Demonstrable experience of reducing or removing service complexity
  • Understanding of the constraints and opportunities of services on the internet
  • Previous contributions to design workshops
  • Ability to work with a complex and challenging set of stakeholders, working autonomously away from team
  • Detailed understanding of legislative, financial and reputational risk and experience of putting in working practices to prevent and mitigate errors
Desirable Experience / Skills :
  • Demonstrable experience of writing for user interfaces
  • Demonstrable experience of assessing a service according to an assessment standard
  • Experience working in agile environments
  • Demonstrable experience of line management, helping colleagues with their career development and coaching more junior designers
