UCLH Cancer

Cancer care is one of the top three strategic priorities for UCLH. Our vision is to become Europe’s premier Cancer centre. An ambitious programme of transformation and investment underpins this vision. Highlights include the centralisation of complex care across north and east London to UCLH encompassing haemato-oncology, urology, head & neck, neuro-oncology and upper GI, and building a new hospital containing 135 haematology beds, 10 theatres, leading edge imaging and the nationally commissioned Proton Beam Therapy Service.

Department overview

UCLH has been designated as one of two national Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) centres for the UK and will be delivering PBT from 2020. The PBT department is situated in the new phase 4 building. The PBT pre-treatment suite will have an MRI scanner and a CT scanner dedicated to the purposes of PBT planning. The post holder will be part of the pre-treatment team working in the PBT MRI scanner.

The PBT department will see around 750 NHS patients and up to 250 privately funded patients a year. The service will focus mainly on the treatment of CNS tumours, head and neck cancers and spinal/pelvic sarcomas. Paediatrics, and teenage and young adults, will make up approximately one third of the patient cohort.

The Role

This role offers a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of the dynamic pre-treatment radiotherapy team at UCLH in the new post of MRI Superintendent Radiographer. The post holder will provide professional clinical leadership and effective management of the MRI proton service and staff working in the pre-treatment suite. He/she will play a key role in the implementation and safe delivery of specialist MRI planning for PBT. They will develop MRI policies, protocols and scan sequences and lead in MRI training of radiographic staff (therapeutic and diagnostic) and other professions working within the PBT service. The post holder will also play an active role in research and development with a focus on MRI imaging for precise tumour or organ at risk delineation, motion management, MRI only radiotherapy planning functional imaging and for treatment and post-treatment evaluation.

Comprehensive proton beam therapy training will be provided alongside the existing departmental training and education framework.

UCLH is seeking a committed individual with the energy and focus to continue building on the existing service of excellence and with the ability to lead in their area of expertise.
