Summary

A Vacancy at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Acute General Physician (with an interest in surgical medicine and perioperative care)

Chelsea and Westminster NHS FT are looking to recruit an Acute General Physician (with an interest in surgical medicine and perioperative care)’ to develop and deliver the Trust’s new perioperative physician service across our two hospital sites.

This exciting pilot project is designed to develop the role of the perioperative physician service across the surgical pathway to optimise the patient before and after surgery, in order to deliver high quality patient care and support swift and safe discharge.

The physician will initially work to optimise patients before and after Emergency General Surgery and Colorectal surgery in order to improve patient care and outcomes. They will work as part of an extended team, spanning both the Emergency and Integrated Care (E&IC) and Planned Care divisions to help ‘join up’ surgery and medicine functions. This will require close collaboration with nursing staff, other specialist physicians, anaesthetists and surgeons to develop new pathways and processes in order to deliver comprehensive risk-management and high quality outcomes for our most complex comorbid patients

At the same time, the role will be given time to lead a broader service improvement programme to scope out and develop a wider perioperative structure, including other specialties and pre-operative pathways.

This new structure could cover all age ranges, may include elective as well as non-elective pathways and has the potential to incorporate the innovative use of pre-habilitation, preoperative optimisation, Same Day Emergency Care (ambulatory emergency care) and community out-reach. This will be for the post holders to jointly determine, design, gain support for and implement
