The Confidential Computing group at Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK) is searching for an exceptional researcher in the area of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The researcher is expected to develop a programme of research in novel techniques to provide strong security, privacy, integrity and confidentiality guarantees for machine learning and artificial intelligence systems and applications. The researcher will join a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in machine learning, security, operating systems, software verification, and programming languages.

About Confidential Computing group: Our group has been conducting pioneering research in the design of systems that guarantees strong security and privacy properties to cloud users. We are also invested in the design of language runtimes that guarantee safety by construction, and in designing new services such as databases, blockchains and machine learning algorithms that utilize secure hardware and runtimes to guarantee strong security properties such as confidentiality, integrity and side channel protection. We place strong emphasis on designing systems that can be deployed at scale in the real world. We work very closely with products groups in Microsoft and have contributed to deployed services such as Azure Confidential Computing.

The researcher is expected to be able to work with product groups to frame a research agenda and organise their own time. The researcher will need to be able to work effectively within a highly multidisciplinary team.

- PhD in Computer Science in the areas of security, privacy, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.
- High quality publications in top conferences.
- Hands-on experience in building machine learning systems and using frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
- Knowledge of supervised learning, unsupervised learning and causal learning.
- Experience in designing systems with an emphasis on security and/or privacy aspects including trusted execution environments (e.g., Intel SGX), privacy notions such as k-anonymity and differential privacy, and cryptographic protocols.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary research teams.
