There is an exciting opportunity to apply for a staff nurse development post on the acute respiratory ward at Worthing hospital. Eastbrook is a 23 bedded medical respiratory ward admitting general medical patients, primarily with a variety of acute and chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD, Asthma, TB, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, which may require basic respiratory support. Advanced treatments offered on Eastbrook are non-invasive ventilation, chest drains and optiflow; it is a designated ward for the safe care of tracheostomies and laryngectomies. There’s an MDT approach from consultant, respiratory nurse specialist, experienced nurses and allied health care professionals. Teaching and support is provided by the outreach team, respiratory nurse specialist and the ward sister. This dynamic ward also utilises IT technology with electronic patient observations and prescribing, with plans in the near future to implement ‘evolve’ a paper free electronic patient records. The team are committed to providing high quality care and are supportive to junior staff to allow them to develop their knowledge and skills and gain competence in a variety of specialist respiratory interventions.
A full development plan has been designed to help any successful candidate to gain the knowledge, skills and experience to work in this specialist area. The initial 18 month programme includes completion of relevant competencies supported by educational activities and study days on respiratory assessment, caring for tracheostomies and attending the AIMS course. A variety of experiential learning will be offered including working with the outreach team, a visit to the Lane Fox unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, and working with a respiratory specialist nurse. This would help consolidate learning from the ward and support further development.
Once the 18 month programme has been completed the opportunity will be given to attend the respiratory and mentorship module at Brighton University. This will then open up the prospects to apply for promotion within the respiratory ward.
