About me
A caring, energetic, and experienced Female Carer / Communication Support Worker is required to support a happy and lively five-year-old child who is profoundly Deaf from birth and uses British Sign Language (BSL) as her main method of communication.
The child is a bilateral cochlear implant user and communicates using a total communication approach, including both British Sign Language and spoken language at home and within school. She attends a specialist school for Deaf children in St Albans and is a bright, active, and energetic child who enjoys engaging with the world around her. She is currently awaiting an ADHD assessment.
This rewarding role involves supporting the child to access play activities, communication, and social interaction in a safe and engaging environment, both within the home and occasionally within the community once a positive relationship has been established.
Hours and rate of pay 4 hours per week during term time
8 hours per week during school holidays
Working Pattern:
• 1–2 days per week
• Flexible working pattern
• Mostly weekends during term time
• Flexible days during school holidays
Location Colney Heath, AL4
DBS/Checks Confirmation of DBS check
Right to Work and references will be needed.
Training Training will be offered to enable to complete the mandatory training required:
• Safeguarding Children
• Introduction to first aid
• Health and Safety
What you would be doing…
Supporting a profoundly Deaf child to access indoor and outdoor play activities
Supporting communication through fluent British Sign Language
Translating spoken English into age-appropriate BSL
Translating BSL into spoken English to support communication of wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings where appropriate
Supporting social interaction with both adults and peers
Supporting homework activities where necessary
Ensuring the child’s safety during outings and activities
The person I would like…
Female PA/support worker
Full UK driving licence with access to own vehicle
Signature Level 3 qualification (or above) in British Sign Language
Signature Level 2 Certificate in Communication Support Work for Deaf Learners (or equivalent experience)
Minimum Level 2 English qualification
Experience working with children
Confident and fluent BSL communication skills
• Experience working with children with ADHD
• Deaf or CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) applicants welcomed due to native BSL experience and cultural understanding
The ideal candidate will be kind, patient, professional, expressive, and committed, with excellent use of body language, facial expressions, and eye contact to support effective communication with a young Deaf child. They should feel comfortable within Deaf environments and demonstrate awareness and understanding of Deaf culture and communication styles.
The successful candidate will be warm, engaging, energetic, and confident in supporting a child to develop communication, confidence, independence, and social interaction in a positive and supportive way.
