Due to the opening of a new service, an exciting opportunity has become available for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Taunton.

Cygnet Taunton is opening a new 15-bed neuro-cognitive service, which will provide comprehensive, long-term inpatient care for older adults living with complex cognitive and neurological conditions alongside a psychiatric sequela.

The Neurocognitive Health Pathway offers patients an improved quality of life and improved functionality often not easily available to them due to their complex psychiatric and physical presentations.

Treatment and therapy is provided to optimise their abilities and reduce the impact of the neurodegenerative diagnosis they have; providing a stabilisation of symptoms and symptom management which reduces complications and preserves independence as long as possible.

Care and treatment is delivered within a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment by an interdisciplinary team.

Job Role

As an SLT you will be working directly with a specialist caseload of patients with complex needs to assess theirspeech, communication and language needs (SCLN) as well as eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS) needs.

You will work deliver input in line with the Cygnet SLT pathway for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative services. As part of a multi-disciplinary team on-site, you will also work with colleagues across the service to support the implementation of management approaches, upskilling the workforce as required.

You will be part of a company-wide SLT service and as such will have the opportunity to participate in large-scale projects. You will receive high quality supervision and be supported with CPD.


We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapist with:

  • A degree / postgraduate diploma (or equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy, registration with HCPC (Health Care Professions Council) and membership of the RCSLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists)

  • Competency to independently assess and manage EDS needs (essential)

  • Experience in the field of older adults, neurology and / or neurodegenerative conditions evidenced by high level of clinical SLT knowledge.

  • Understanding of Positive Behaviour Support with an emphasis on person-centred planning

  • Evidence of being a strong team player with a genuine desire to help others

  • Excellent communication / time management skills
