Summary

About us

UCL is a radically different university. Founded in 1826 in the heart of London, we were the first university in England to welcome students of any religion and the first to welcome women to university education. Today UCL has over 50,000 students and more than 18,000 staff and is one of the world's top universities. We are ranked second in the UK for research power and first in London (REF 2021).

Campus Infrastructure & Experience (CI&E) plays a central role in supporting UCL's extensive estate, which spans over 600,000m² and underpins the work of a large and diverse academic community. The Maintenance Operations team delivers critical facilities management services across this complex environment, ensuring that buildings, infrastructure and systems are safe, reliable and fit for purpose.

About the role

This is an excellent opportunity to join our Maintenance and Operations team as a Building Surveyor, playing a key role in delivering building fabric services across the UCL estate.

You will act as a focal point for maintenance-related matters, working closely with departments and stakeholders across the portfolio. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with project delivery, including planned works, long-term maintenance programmes and one-off improvement projects.

You'll be responsible for coordinating and delivering a range of activities, from inspections and surveys through to contractor management and project oversight. This includes drafting specifications, managing procurement processes, and ensuring works are delivered to time, cost and quality expectations.

The role also involves maintaining accurate asset data, contributing to business improvement initiatives, and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements such as health and safety, asbestos and other building-related regulations.

About you

We're looking for someone with strong technical knowledge and practical experience in building maintenance within a complex, multi-site environment.

You will bring experience of managing maintenance operations, working with contractors and delivering projects, alongside a solid understanding of building fabric and associated compliance requirements.

You'll be confident planning and prioritising workloads, managing competing demands, and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. Strong communication skills and a proactive, solution-focused approach are key.

A relevant professional qualification and commitment to ongoing professional development are essential, and experience of project management and service delivery in a changing environment will be important to succeed in the role.

What we offer

As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

  • 41 Days holiday (including 27 days annual leave 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • On-Site nursery
  • On-site gym
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
  • Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
  • Discounted medical insurance
