We are delighted to invite applications for an enthusiastic Associate practitioner/Trainee to join our friendly mammography team.

The Beds & Herts Breast Screening Service is one of the largest in the country and provides the highest standards of breast cancer care to women living across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire

The successful candidate will join our dedicated team providing high quality mammogram examinations to screening and symptomatic women. We are looking for a caring, motivated individual who can work individually and as part of our multidisciplinary team.

You will have health care experience ideally, be able to work as part of team and be positive in nature.

The role will involve undertaking mammography examinations at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and on mobile screening units, requiring you to travel throughout Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The role will include providing valuable support to clinicians and patients during breast assessment and symptomatic clinics.

Following successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, the post holder might be offered a full time Band 4 position at Bedfordshire Hospitals, subject to available positions at the time.

We offer extensive support during the apprenticeship and hope apprentices will continue their journey with us long term.



The Associate Practitioner role is to produce high quality mammograms for breast screening, family history and symptomatic breast services. The role includes providing emotional and psychological support for women in our care and assisting breast clinicians during ultrasound examinations and interventional procedures.

Breast Care services operate at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and on mobile screening units across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and the ability to travel between sites is required.

Candidates without the appropriate experience will be expected to undertake practical training and academic study to obtain qualification.

Applicants should hold a recognised qualification in mammographic practice.

If you do not have an appropriate qualification, we would be willing to train the successful candidate. The training is an Apprenticeship and would involve undertaking a minimum of 1 year of study at the breast screening unit,attendance at a recognised training centre and passing an assessment at the end of the course. This will be supported by the Trust.

• To provide a high quality mammographic service to the women of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire adhering to NHSBSP guidelines.
• To be able and willing to work at any of the mobile screening sites.
• To perform quality control tests on breast imaging equipment, recording results and reporting all variations to senior staff.
• Liaise effectively within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the smooth daily running of the service.
• Ensure that women attending for breast screening are interviewed in the appropriate manner and are supported and guided through the mammographic process.
• To assist in the symptomatic clinic with general patient care, sterile trolleys setting and assisting during interventional procedures.
• To provide a high standard of care for clients at all times and give appropriate support and assistance as required, this may involve dealing with women who are anxious and distressed.
• To demonstrate effective communicate with clients, having the knowledge to give information and answer questions when appropriate.
• To assist in the general preparation and cleaning of all work areas andmaintenance of stock.
• Ensure that telephone enquiries are taken politely, efficiently and referred to the appropriate staff as necessary.
• To work in all areas on a rotational basis as required by the needs of the service.
• To work in accordance with the Ionising Radiation (medical exposure) Regulations 2000, Trust and NHSBSP policies and guidelines.
• To work to the requirements of the Associate Practitioners Scope of Practice.
• To enter client data on the National Breast Screening Programme computer system and keep accurate and legible records.
• To maintain confidentiality of information relating to the Trust, individuals and clients.
• To take responsibility for their own personal development and remain up to date with changing practices and all mandatory training.
• To maintain a high standard of appearance and hygiene as expected within the service and to comply with uniform policy.
